If you go to any fanwork page (fan art, fanwords, wallpapers, ecards, fan comics) there will be a challenge button that you can click and it will tell you about different challenges in that fan category that people are holding. You can submit that type of fanwork to those challenges and when it's over you get a medal, either a gold (because the person holding the challenge can give up to 3 medals) or silver just by participating.
One of my posts on my Big Sis world talks more about the trophies, but in short they are for the different things you can do here (same categories I mentioned before plus quizzes and comments) the more you submit in one category the higher the trophy level you'll have. It goes from (blank,) bronze, silver, gold, and ruby. So 5 artworks will get you your first trophy, but since comments are easier to have, you'll need more comments to get a trophy for that ^^
