This is weird. I've written some software called WhiteNoir and it converts any image to a strictly 2 image bitmap, which I think might have helped you create this wallpaper. Also, it sounds like the grey bits appeared, when you saved your edited image, because the newest version of MSPaint saves images, by default, as JPEGs. This often wrecks some of the finer definition, if you make sure you save your images as bitmap formats you may find kinder results.
