Well, I usually start with a darker background and then paint these little swirly things -since I kinda dig swirls-. When I paint them, I always start with the darker colors first and then end it with the brightest color. It kind of gives it a lighting effect of sorts. After that, I just use my extra techniques given to me in my workshop. It's kinda hard to explain, but I have tons other designs I've done. ^.^
