No problem! :) I used PS 7 for sooooo many of my walls. I didn't get any CS programs until last year or so. I also used to use the magnet tool, but it sometimes doesn't do the trick. I'd say if you go through with that tool, and it's still rough looking, then use the polygonal one and zoom in real close to the edges, then select the rough parts that don't belong and delete them. Also, using the pen tool is helpful. That's what most people actually use, but I never quite found it that easy to use when extracting. Other tricks that may help: if your extracted edges are a light color, different from what your character is (meaning it was rough), use the burn tool, set to "highlights" and up to 70% or more, and just go around those white parts. It will turn them black and usually make them appear as if they're just outlines or they blend in better with the bg.
You could also search for some tutorials on deviantart, and this wonderful site run by some friends of mine called Egao Distant Destiny! EDD. Too lazy to link you to it, but just search and you should find it. :) They offer already extracted png's, textures, and tutorials!
Well I usually use Adobe Photoshop 7 since it all I have but when I'm at school I use Adobe Photoshop CS3 which is really awesome. For my extracting,I use the magnet tool usually and it usually works but apparently it didn't work very well for this time around. I may end up taking this wallpaper down,I'm not sure yet or I'll find a more high res image to use. I didn't think you were being mean at all. I actually thought what you said was helpful and friendly. Thanks a lot for the helpful advice. I will definitely be taking what you said with a lot of consideration. Thanks so much for your help

"Horrible"? No, it's not horrible. But it just needs some work. The extraction is really rough, and it looks like you smudged parts of her hair...but that doesn't really look too good. Could you tell me how you go about extracting your scans? Like what tools you use? Maybe I could give you some tips with them. And as for the bg, it's a neat idea, bu the graphic in back of her is really pixely and blurry because you resized it up. NEVER size smaller images up because then it looks low quality. I suggest going on dA and downloading some custom shapes that you can use in photoshop instead. :) Cause then you can size them however you want, but since they're vector shapes, they won't get blurry! What photoshop do you use? If you search around here you can find shapes to download...but you have to make sure it's for your version. If you need help installing them, just ask.
Sorry for writing so much. ^^; I was trying to help! I wasn't trying to be mean or anything; I was just pointing out some stuff since you asked.
