Yes they were, I think it was more of an alliance than anything else. Greed is also the most human of any homunculi in all honesty. I liked Greed best because he was more human than the rest.
It has a point! I don't think they can because Homunculi only have one of each of the seven deadly sins. They have no other emotions or personality flaws... Like Ed said Envy was jealous of friendship and that humans create withstanding relationships. And Selim will always think he is better than humans.
