This looks really nice! You did great with the grass brush and the lighting makes it look like they're actually laying there and its very realistic. :D
I know what you mean about going outside your comfort zone and trying new things. Sometimes its amazing what you can do when you're just experimenting and then you just let the process take over itself until you finally sit back and look at it and you surprised yourself because you're happy with it and then it feels like your best and then it becomes one of your favorites, to an extent. That's the best way I can describe it, but I like to think of it as one of the joys of graphic art, haha.
