Yeap, that method works, indeed! just add a "little bit" of imagination, and you get something like this...

It was actually quite easy once I figured it out. In photoshop start with a yellow background then use the colour halftone filter (with max radius set to minimum). That gives you the little red dots, then you just add your images building up new layers with the layer blending modes set to multiply so you can see the background of dots through them.
