The tragedy behind the character Enma Ai lies in her backstory. When she was seven, she was supposed to be buried alive in a sacrifice to the Mountin God in order to ensure good crops. However, her cousin and only friend, Sentarou, under instruction from her parents, saved her by taking her to the mountains to hide under pretense that he buried her there. There she lived peacefully for a few years until a year of famine came and some boys decided to follow her cousin into the mountains. When the boys, and in turn, the village, found out she was still alive, they blind-folded her and her parents and buried them, having Sentarou do so to atone for his sins. She called out for his help and managed to slip a part of her blindfold off only to discover that he himself was burying her. A great feeling of betrayal and intense hatred grew inside of her, and she promised to hate them forever. She manages to escape from her grave and buries her entire village, which catches the Master of Hell's attention. He makes a deal with her that if she becomes the messenger of vengeance and hatred, her parents will not be sent to hell. In order to do this, she must numb herself to her own hatred. She agrees, thus making the character she is throughout the series.
