I had no idea we were seeing the 3D version until we got to the theatres and I'm glad we did. That thing was spectacular. The Pandoran foliage was gorgeous and I'm glad that the 3D aspect wasn't flaunted like other movies would have done. It was great, from a geek perspective.
I saw Avatar last night. It was visually stunning, especially in 3D. I loved that they spent some time actually explaining Pandora and how everything fits together. That made it seem more real.
The story was pretty generic, but it worked for this film I think. You were able to just sit back and enjoy the beauty of Pandora without getting too bogged down in complexity.
I also think the story worked largely because the Na'vi were so expressive and fantastic. The female love interest (whose name I can't remember) was really stunning as a character. I loved her facial expressions. You could see when she was about to cry or when she was happy...it was incredible. I don't think I've seen such believable, beautiful CG animated characters before.
The interaction between live and CGI was also extremely good. Apparently Weta helped out with Avatar, which really shows. They're geniuses, I think.
