Totally understandable. That's actually how I like to rank some of my fanfictions on ff.net using their hit counter. I'm sure someone would end up sabotaging eventually, but after a while all thought of that should die down once users get used to the system. Besides, I've noticed that I give myself hits every time I access my art to check my stats, though I'm logged in. *shrug* I'm just glad that you're the one doing the math and knowing what you're doing; I'd fail horribly. *English major candidate*
Interesting methodology--calculating %'s is pretty intensive on our end and things like sabotage become possible. People can hit-bomb a person's portfolio to demolish their standings.
Yeah... I remember the rankings lists. Those were good times. *nodnod*
The important parts though...? While I don't have anything on the member list, I have an idea for the art lists. I think that maybe a hugs/favorites per view would be a good filter for lists. This could help curb the vast difference between the amount of views/hugs/favorites the mega-hits gain over the smaller ones. No matter how much anyone wants to admit it, lots of people enjoy shows like Death Note, Naruto and Bleach and these shows naturally generate more fans than shows like Zenki, for example. A large number of hits can simply mean that the show in question and/or artist is the talk of the town, but if the number of people who hug/favorite is low, the quality can be underestimated as possibly second or third rate, despite just being low-rated due to drawing less attention.
For instance: if I have a drawing of Ichigo from Bleach that has two hundred hits, but no favorites, hits or even the pathetic "lolz kewl pix" comments, then I can assume that most people only looked because it was Ichigo and the thumbnail was misleading. Now if I end up getting those same two hundred hits, but fifty-six hugs, that's pretty good. That's a .280 percentage, which is not horrific in baseball for singles. If I happen to gain thirty-one favorites, that's a .155 (a substitute for doubles). Throw in maybe fifteen comments (.075 for triples) and we can pretend that is a slugging percentage of .815 (a.k.a: really good).
Of course, I don't exactly have a substitute for home runs here, and my calculation is not exactly brought to a scientific art, but hopefully it helps. I'm stuck in baseball mode, sorry. I doubt that my math is right.
I think the ranking system idea is fine...we pretty much had one back on the old Otaku with the artists and highest rank wallpaper submitters, etc. I guess a lot of people don't remember it or never knew it was there.XD I like the idea of showcasing new members since that is always a problem on DA...if you're new you pretty much have to work your tail off to get people to see your stuff.
Oh and hey, to add to a new list of things I think could improve this site is kinda a minor one...but with the PM's, it should be like how myO had it where you could check a bunch of PM's at once and delete them all...having to delete messages individually like the way it is now is a pain. Especially if you have 100's of messages you want to get rid of.
Ooooh good idea - but where will it be? i couldn't find it on the old myO >_< silly me...
and for some reason i can't favourite anything - it says bad server response... Can you take a lookie at that sometime when you aint too busy? Thanks you legend ^_^
Well since it would be easiest to just do it like before since the idea is already there I guess do it like that, but I have a problem, when I try favoriting something is says "bad server resonance" anything wrong with that?
You know that someone truly cares when they brick you like that. -AZ
Well... That's a tough one. It went by views in the past, right? Well. Everything's pretty new right now, but soon there will be some very far ahead of everyone else. And I don't know if I want to see the same person in the #1 spot like last time. I like spontaneous stuff. I don't know though. Maybe views is all you can really go by.. Maybe the amount of artwork contributed to theO could have something to do with you ranking? Or maybe Subscribers? Just ideas I'm springing, don't take them literally. :P
I think it's important to go by views... But then others think 'hugs', and 'favorites' are important too. The thing is, most of the popular pieces of artwork are from the bigger fandoms, like Naruto, Death Note, and Bleach. What will happen to the amazing artwork that just got overlooked because of the anime/manga title?

This reminds me of the Member's List in MyO... I liked the idea then where updated members gets listed. It's a great way to meet new people.
The ranking though might be a bit of a pain.
