My first suggestion, if you have the money, laser surgery is a good investment. Second, I recommend contacts; they're really not that bad. I had to where contacts because of tracks and soccer, but before I was really skeptical about it. But it was not as bad as I thought. It's a routine thing now. It takes a while to get used to. It took me hours to put on when I first learned how to wear them, and you eventually get used to them. It all comes in time, just like kickboxing!
For soft contact lenses, they cost aprox. 20 dollars for a pack of 6 lenses (3 pairs) and last 2 weeks per pair (one month). At least that's what I get them for, not including insurance I believe.
I don't know if you're near of far sighted. If your like me, you can be fine when you get in their faces, but blind anywhere beyond a 5 foot radius. But what it sounds like is that your far-sighted. Can't help there.
My sensei once told me that if someone with glasses were to hold their hand in front of their face at a distance where it can clearly be seen and proceed to open and close it 50 times twice a day (morning and night,) their eyesight would eventually improve.
Of course, that may just be one of those crazy karate instructor legends. I'd suggest contacts if you can find a good brand. I know some people who do fine with contacts.
I know how you feel xD I had to make the same decision 5 years ago back when I took Kung Fu classes. I was 10, and that was back when I wore my glasses. My lessons ran for 45 minutes, and I could cope without my glasses.
I've been wearing contact lenses for 3 years now, and I think they're great! I say go and try them again =D It it scary for putting them in your eyes the first time, but you tend to adapt to them quickly. You'd be fine. They do cost lots of money, but it's better than keep having to buy updated glasses (an replacement for broken ones).
I have monthly ones for about $150.. if that helps... O_o

I don't like contacts either. I'm frightened of them. My friends always complain how they dry up and when I go to Dara's house I have to look away when she takes them out it's just too creepy XO
Just take them off. It won't be that blurry (then again I don't know how bad your eyesight is =/ ).
Not sure, although I don't think you should give it up.
I have glasses and am absolutely terrified of contacts. I've never tried them, but just the concept of placing something in your eye freaks me out. But I wouldn't go without the glasses either. The blur world makes me sick after a bit. Maybe you should try the contacts. Either that or find some goggles. I knew a guy who walked around with them around his neck and he was pretty cool.
Definetely try the contact lenses again!!! Don't let something as small as glasses get in your way! (and it's such a c0ol hobby!)
My eyes are horrible! When i look at your WORLD w/out my glasses, the words are a fuzzy, faint, white line x__X. In soccer, I had to wear goofy googles D8 (they were actually kinda spiffy, but the fact that I had to wear them at all sucked). I endured the stupid things because I could only see a small blurry white blob rolling around the field w/out them >__>. And mostly b/c I FEAR contacts. I'd try 'em now that I'm in HS, but there were just too many reasons why I didn't want contacts. It would take me an hour just to get through the mental fear and stick 'em in my eyes...
@__@
Anywayzz,
The cost of contacts (in my knowledge) varies. It depends on what quality you want. If you g to any doctor, they might gie you some crappy things to put in your eyes. But if you go to a skilled doctor, he'll give better quality contacts which probably cost more. And I beleive there are 'no glare' contacts like my glasses, which are 50x better than glasses with the glare and blinding lights. x____x
So you're gonna have to check with your eye doctor on that one.
Whatever you do, don't give up something so cool just 'coz of baka-glasses, settle with the googles if you have to. ^o__o^
Ah dude you have the same problem as me. Glasses and when you take them off you see everything as a blur, exactly my problem. Contact lenses scare me too, I mean what if you lose them, they're so small they are hard to find. Hmm, quite a problem I really don't know what to say as a definite answer, it's all on personal preferences, find what works best for you. But I do have the same problem plus I'm a Thai boxer so I know how that training is more or less.
I have no idea how much contacts cost (my mom pays for mine) but if I were you that's what I'd do. Once you get used to them, they're great and you can't even feel them. It just takes practice.
I actually totally support getting contacts. I love mine. Granted, mine are more expensive than most so I can't really say much about price. My brother gets the sort that you replace every month, or two months, or something. And his contacts cost less for a year than mine do for two pairs ^^;; Insurance covers at least some of his, I think. Mine aren't covered since they are different XP But generally it's something that insurance does cover.
I also wear glasses (mostly because I was a print making major for a while and didn't want to work with chemicals while wearing my glasses), so I do get both.
It will be hard to get used to contacts at first, but it was a lot easier to get the hang of than I thought it would be. Plus, I figure if I can manage to put contacts in my eye while wearing very long, sharpened nails for cosplay then just about anyone can do it normally ^_~
I'd say try contact lenses again, or if it really doesn't work try the sport glasses - that is if you don't feel too uncomfortable about them and who knows that there are some nice-looking sport glasses out there ;)
Thanks for changing the number of updates in the backroom to 20, it really helps a lot ;3
I play soccer and a lot of other sports that involve putting putting my face & glasses at risk. I just do it anyways, and hope I don't get hit. But considering you'll be getting punched/kicked in the face on a regular basis, I'd say either don't wear them (I know how you feel about that though, I'm practically blind without mine) and see if you can get used to it. Or, get some contacts. You could get the one-day-use disposable ones, buy a bunch of them, and use them only when you are fighting. This way you only use them when you have too, and they'll be a lot cheaper.
Daily disposable lenses are a really good thing to have around, and since one generally buys them in monthly batches, the cost can stay down if you don't wear them often.
Soft lenses are pretty much painless and almost never fall out on their own. Hard lenses are rare nowadays, although there are some people who need them; if for some reason you can't go with soft lenses, I guess the goggles might be a better option after all. ^^;;
I, personally, would try sports glasses for just the times you're fighting. Sure, you may look a little funny, but I doubt anyone would laugh at you. You're into martial arts, man. That means a butt-whooping if you get teased by the other kids there. Well, that, or use your Bossman Glare and frighten them into backing down.
I'd look into contacts, they have so many kinds, you'd be surprised. I tend to stick to glasses since I get better vision than contacts can give me. But still, it's worth giving them a try, especially if it's the softer kinds. I don't like the other type. XP If I had to wear the more rigid contacts, I probably wouldn't.
But I get to cheat, my vision is good enough that I can get by without my glasses, it's the hours and hours of work in front of a computer screen that I can't do without them. So yeah, if you don't want to try something else, I'd suggest giving contacts a try. ^_^
I haven't worn glasses since last August. I hate seeing things as a blur, and contacts, I can't keep trying to pull things out of my eye all the time, won't you get pink-eye from that, and sports glasses, well...I haven't really seen anything like that, or heard of them. You could try contact lenses. I'm not sure, I hear they're pretty expensive though.
You shouldn't give up on it though and look for something else to do, you'll figure it out. You're not the type to just give up like that! Contact lenses frighten me though a little. >.<

Option #3: Get goofy sports glasses
I'd look like a complete idiot.
Sounds like the least painful option to me. And it's a small price to pay to keep up with the martial arts and not go through the pain and expense of contact lenses.
Would you be willing to fight mostly-blind for minutes at a time? It's not like you'll be goin' all-out contact against people the entire 2 hours, right? You could always just take your glasses off at those points, how 'bout?
I'm just thinking about the guys with glasses at my club; we're less of a problem 'cause we don't spar, so a lot of guys just keep their glasses on. Though, when we were in China, he did take his glasses off and more or less did his form "blind" (he still did well, though, so hey).
Ah yes, I had that problem when I played soccer back in middle school and didn't have contacts yet. I had to wear the big, goofy goggles...still haven't forgiven my parents for forcing me to wear those.XP
Contacts are definitely more expensive then glasses. As you know, I wear them but there's a ton of variety now. I have the kind that you throw away every 2 months and a year's supply of those is about $150. I have health insurance though that covers some of it so $150 is what I pay WITH my health insurance. My sis wear the kinds that last...well, as many years as you want to wear them! And a pair of those are only $50 but I can't wear those kinds anymore because my eyes just get too dry. Plus, you have to figure the cost of the saline solution you have to use daily to clean them, etc. etc. So, yeah, they're more expensive but if you're going to be physically active, I don't think it would be a bad idea to have a pair just for when you're going to be "out and about."
Boy, with all this martial arts you're going to be taking, you're going to be able to kick my butt at the next con...but watch it since I'm a runner and can hail butt pretty fast.:P
I'd say try contact lenses again. My friend Lauryn was terrified of them too, but she talked to her doctor about it and they found ones that are easier to get in. And I don't think they're super expensive.. Depends on the person I think.
It'd be sad if you had to give it up. Sounds like fun.
