I cannot believe I just saw this! Thankyou for laying these down! It makes things alot clearer and easier to understand. I noticed that a few of my works got deleted because of the fanart reason, however I never knew they were fanart ^^;. And then, I would see other people use fanart and nothing was done about it to my knowledge. :/

Ahem, this is absolutely the one post on TheOtaku that has taught me the most. It's the post with the most, if you will. So, major kudos to you!
My only (insignificant) little detail to possibly add - to the second page, when you mention that an artifact of scanning is apparent sometimes as that distinctively coarse, grainy look. That could be an artifact of scanning, yes, insomuch as it my belie the original printed nature of the artwork presented. For an extreme example, consider Lichtenstein's artwork - extraordinarily large versions of comic book panels (there's irony here if you don't know the artwork and you do a quick google search and don't see any dots... because extremely small images online will have the reverse effect, you won't see all the dots - as you would in person, staring at these very large works of art). The 'dots' may simply be that manifestation of the printing process, whereby different colors are achieved through the placement of tiny dots of different color more or less close together. From a normal distance, your eye doesn't notice the dots - it's just a field of color. But scan it in and magnify it to a great degree, and you get dots. Closely related, I'd say, is the good ol' moire pattern artifacts.
Ah yes! I knew I forgot the point that out, I was planning on doing that, but I got so into the screenshots & whatnot- yeah, the outlines are a good way to determine it as well. I'll add it to the guide. ^^
Yeppers, I plan to list those as the two main ones to use. :)
As for the ecchi, that's what I'm going to explain as well; how to avoid it as much as possible, but for iqdb, it's difficult to avoid.
Tineye is better for finding DeviantART artwork, actually- a lot of people will post the picture on another site, without altering the url- and DA always lists the title + the artist's username in their urls, so it becomes easy to track them down.
I also use Zerochan to find them as well; since it has a good tagging system, like MT + lists the artist's Pixiv page.
I feel like you went through my brain and posted what's in there.
I do exactly this to tell if an artwork is digital or not, especially looking at the outlines, digital artwork's outlines are uber steady while scanned stuff's outlines look sketchy because they seem to be rather inked instead of be done digitally.
Did that make sense? It was clear in my mind at least. xD
Oh! Do you know about these sites? They are uber good to track down the source of an artwork:
-IQDB
-sauceNAO
Though beware of the hentai ^^'
And tbh, tineye is like my last resort lol.
Lol, that'll never happen, but I can dream, right? <3
You have a point, some scans make it difficult to tell- but those are the things I see the most when it comes to scans, but I do put emphasis on double checking, if you're unsure- which is what the next page will be about.
As for official digital artists, I'd suggest always doing some research to make sure if they're official- I should update this post and mention that?
Otherwise, thanks for your input; it helps a lot. :)
Yeppers, I know about tineye. That's for page 3 + a few other sites, ; w; Though, I thank you for tossing in your ideas; if you have any other things you'd like to share that you think would be helpful, share some more- I've been editing this thing like crazy. xD
This is IMMENSELY helpful! You went further into detail than any other guide that I have read, and I really appreciate this. This will definitely be helpful for future reference. Thank you for posting this! ^^
Congrats on all of this so far! It's amazing. <33 I hope they feature this on the front page of theO for all to see!!
The quality thing...it might not always work, I don't think. I don't know. Obviously with scans like the second example...very easy to tell with the scan artifacts...but with the top one, just cause it's blurry, you never know. And same with the bottom...though that tends to be usual for digital art. Umm, but what if it's an official artist and totally legit to use, but it's all digital by them? O:
I'll be honest, I didn't read every single sentence so maybe you addressed that. XD;
I've been reporting a lot of things on MT (duplicates, LQ wallpapers, misplaced items, and recently Pixiv artwork), and some of my reports have gotten a few listed 'official' mangakas tags removed, because all of their work was Pixiv based; which brought up the topic.
But you're right; in present time, MT handles tagging like pros. ;)
When I noticed the Tag Administration Thread, I was like-- "Oh man. ^*(& just got real."
Thank you! <3 I'm glad it was comprehensible, I've edited it more than all of my high-school essays combined. //laughs
I have to say that now MT only lists official mangakas. The purging ended long ago and most pixiv submissions didn't even include the mangaka tag but if you find some new stuff bring it to me or keep the reports coming and it'll get killed deleted.
There still might be pixiv artwork/digital artwork around but I don't think the mangakas were listed. Scanners aren't precisely active in terms of clearly identifying their stuff >_________________>
But the main key on this whole thing is that if you're unsure about the source of an artwork, ask for guidance.
Great work on this Sol! It's uber clear :3
