I've pretty much used Windows XP professional for a number of years and I just recently upgraded to Windows 7 professional - on the same laptop. Limited all the "bells-and-whistles" to just the basics. All my usual programs seem to be running fine. Age will probably get the better of my poor beast but it's been nice to me so far.
As everybody seems to be saying it can be a number of problems: hardware failure/wearing down, improper installation/setup/upgraded to the wrong version (ex: 32-bit, 64-bit, etc), it could also be a virus or a program that's interfering with your OS. Macs are nice but expensive. You really should give the Mac OS a test run in the store first to see if you're comfortable with the GUI environment. Sometimes it's a little strange to work with if all you've ever used have been Windows systems.
You could have a tech at your local computer store check it out for ya. It doesn't cost that much these days. BUT! The cheapest and easiest way to find answers is to phone for advice. The techs at Microsoft are usually USUALLY helpful. Haha. Sorry for the long ramble. Kind of in nerd-mode at the moment.
Well, I hope you manage to fix your laptop or you can chuck that sucker out the window and find yourself another one that will make ya happy. ^^
I got a mac laptop for my college classes. Mac >>>>> Windows. Even though windows in much cheaper and has certain programs the mac won't have, and vice versa. It's great as it's geared for musicians and graphic artists/designers. You just have to get used to it for a while. Windows tends to require more maintenance and fixing, which could cost you more $$... where as Macs are expensive as it is ($1000!! I'm paying loans for it). But you get what you pay for. I'm happy with it.
Well, have you tried to format it? Or at least clean it with CCleaner for example. Because, most of the time, that's why your computer is trying to commit suicide several times in a day (I mean, shuts down and start again). It's what happened to my dad's. But, I have Windows 7 and never had any problems with it, the only problem comes from my laptop itself (the keyboard is being mean).
Then, no, I don't have a Mac. I actually will never have a Mac, or an iPod or anything created by Apple. :) So I can't help you here.
From what I'm getting, your problem seems fixable. Got a tech friend that can help you out? If not, take it to a service. Sounds like a BIOS/booting issue there.

Computers are just the stupidest thing, really. Too many issues with each model.
My first laptop was a Dell, and it's the one I use most often. I do not necessarily like it, since it runs slow a lot of the time. My other two are both HP, and I haven't had any problems with the latest HP model I bought. I worked on a Mac for my GD position last year, and they ran pretty smooth. I had no complaints about them. The only thing I didn't like is how you had to seriously go through some longer steps to just close a certain program for good. But that's it, really. Another thing: Macs are hella expensive. ;( Good luck with your computer~~~
