I think I'll just echo Kei's sentiments in the last bit of her comment. Good Lord was that a load of crap. If it was one of those continue the story threads, I'd feel more generous since those are usually much worse. But damn, some people need their heads examined for publishing that trash.
Mother of God, that made me want to shoot myself in the face. There wre so many things wrongs with it (and fortunately, you touched on just about all all of them), I can't believe someone even had a -thought- of publishing this.
And you know, the real kicker for me was the bit of "verse" (and I normally hate dealing with poetry). I have seen people use verse clues in literature (Brian Jacques is a master of it) and that was an insult to any good writer that has ever done it. I mean seriously.
Whoever is part of the "literary club" needs to be dragged into a square and hanged at the gallows. Old school. And the adviser needs to be fired. Out of a cannon. Into the sun.

Could have been an animal activist, but I doubt they would have actually killed the rabbit to make the point. Unless they were with PETA.
Nah. A PETA supporter would have killed off one of the three oh-so-readily available human beings in the vicinity rather than the poor, frightened, abused rabbit. Besides, wolves don't eat meat. Nothing eats meat. Ever. Stop lying.
Though that scenario may have shortened your suffering considerably.
