My first job was actually working as a library aide (no volunteering required). It's actually a rewarding job. Sure, you may have to deal with doing shelf reading when you're not busy actually shelving things, but it's nice to be surrounded by something you love.
You also get to share that passion with others (especially when you learn the Dewey Decimal System forwards and backwards) and if they don't like what you suggest, there are a ton of other books lying around that they can peruse.
All in all, for a bibliophile, it's a cushy gig (as long as you don't get caught up in reading the books yourself).

That makes sense to me. But from the perspective that I have basically a four year gap of unemployment with no real good reason to explain it aside from "school hurr hurr", just being able to write down that I worked for a solid semester would be something for me. =P
What Shin said. I had to volunteer for so many hours before they were willing to pay me a salary. Which is okay, I guess, don't get me wrong. Volunteer work is great... It's just kind of annoying when you need money. >>;
But yeah! Working at a library would be cool. I did it until my senior year in high school for a few hours a week just to have some spending money. Then my dad was like, "Get a job that pays more than minimum, you're starting part time senior year."

If your library is anything like my local library, they might want you to volunteer at first. That's what happened with me, anyway.
