...it’s about connecting, socially, with others and finding common ground in how you feel and think on certain issues.
True. And there I feel that my temperament is at a disadvantage, for while I am not exempt from the social need, its pull on me is far weaker than on most people. At large parties I skirt the edge of the crowd by choice—not because I am nervous or shy, but because I am at peace watching others enjoy themselves. And while I will not consciously attempt to drive people who wish to connect away from me, I don't feel the need to reaffirm myself by seeking to connect.
Sounds rather melancholic when you think about it, doesn't it? =P
I think for anyone who follows a certain subject closely (whether it's world affairs, anime, gaming or whatever), the entertainment value is simply in the pleasure of discussion.
I recognise this. And, as I said, to an extent I respect that. ('Respect' here meaning 'I understand how a person can find pleasure in the activity and refuse to judge them on it'.)
But I have no use for such entertainment. If I see someone express their stance and I agree with it, I feel no need to say anything beyond a token 'I agree'. 'I feel the same way.' 'Right on, sister.' If I disagree, I see no reason to involve myself unless what I mentioned already occurs, and even then that depends on whether or not they want to listen.
And that brings us back to your final statement, about everyone's desires being met. And with that I also agree.
Uh... so basically you're saying you shouldn't talk about stuff if you only intend to fight? I don't mean to be... but I'm just a little lost. ^^ If I'm right though, I agree.
I like talking about stuff, but I don't like it when people fight. -_-
oO Sounds like you get kind of mean if people are being dumb. I'm not sure if I get that right either. o_O
Usually, I feel there is no need for me to comment on well over half of the stuff I read. If I instantly think of something I have to say, then sure I'll say or type it. Whatever.
However, if all I have to say is one sentence (unless it's a joke or some such thing. One liners can be quite fun) then I tend to just go on to the next topic.
I really like how you changed the initial phrasing most people say to that you can have no impact on them. Sure, these things that we all hear about bother us. Sure, sometimes we just want to scream at people for being so blanking stupid or down right evil. But. Will it ever do any good? In my experience, I've seen plenty of people get worked up over stuff that they can't change worth diddlysquat and all it does for them is makes them ridiculously angry or depressed.
Then again, there really are some things that have to be said. There are some topics that I cannot help but speak about. Somethings, people just have to understand or hear. I have to try, even if it at first seems that it is futile. Sure, I frequently get shot down by people who don't care. Sure, more often than not people don't listen even if I have a perfectly valid point. Still, sometimes one just can't keep quite.
Still, sometimes those "Man, that's terrible" comments just slip out.
An "out of patience" Allamorph is a formidable thing. I see your father has done you well, in a scary kind of way. o_0
There are quite a few topics that I let slide. Some arguments can't be won, even with reason, so why bother with them? At other times though, when someone is so blind with arrogance, even if he won't see reason, I'll have the irresistible urge to present my case for the sake of any onlooker that will see reason. A discussion of that nature is often for the benefit of bystanders rather than the instigator of my response, therefore public forums are a rather ideal place to have them. Due to the way I spend the majority of my time (in a full-time volunteer Bible education work), I encounter people of this nature regularly, people that wouldn't lift me from their own gutter if they saw me laying there. It saddens me that something such as religious difference would result in that level of hostility, but it's to be expected. Nevertheless, I continue in my work.
After all, there are some things that a person simply cannot stay quiet about.

I don't think most people get into discussions like that just for the purpose of arguing - as you point out, you don't debate, you discuss. And often a discussion has multiple view points that aren't always identical.
When you ask "will it do anything?", well, no, but that also misses the point as to why people have those discussions in the first place. I think for anyone who follows a certain subject closely (whether it's world affairs, anime, gaming or whatever), the entertainment value is simply in the pleasure of discussion.
I mean it's cool to just have those "Yeah, that's cool" moments - we all have those.
The beauty of an online community, I guess, is that you get that variety. Some people want to have deep, complex discussions - totally valid - and others just want to have basic fun/entertainment. Both are equally valuable.

As a person who also likes to discuss, I sincerely admire that you seek truth and understanding as oppose to competition of ideals and arrogant projections of superiority.
Losing patience with foolish rabble is completely understandable. After all, fools sometimes deserve aggressive enlightenment. Speaking of which, after watching you dissect opinions on religiousness and spirituality(even though I know that a person like you only scratched the surface of what you really had in mind), if I have some kind of idea of how you could be after losing your patience, I could only imagine how the man who raised you must be like in a situation like that! O_O Sounds very interesting to me, to say the least. For sure there would be something to be learned.
Anyway, I had fun reading this. Very informative on the mind of Allamorph.
O_O I can only imagine what would trigger that kind of response from you. It also reminds me of a point in the Sherlock Holmes stories that I am reading. Where Holmes is talking to Watson about how he is right about something.
"I shall keep on piling fact up on fact upon you until your reason breaks down under them and acknowledges me to be right."
It was not so much arrogance but rather a surety of his knowledge or lack of knowledge on the other person's part. Unless I misunderstand what you are getting at here.
I hope I never warrant that kind of response from you. ^^ And I can understand, or I think I do, what you mean by not getting into a discussion just for the sake of arguing.

Without getting too long winded, I can see that. =P Because truthfully, unless it's a genuine discussion, it's just not worth wasting your time.
