Avantasia was the princess of a cold, dark country. Even though one would think a princess had everything she ever wanted or needed, there was one thing Avantasia didn't have. She wanted to be alone. All she ever wanted was peace and quiet, but as a princess, she had to be an icon of her country, and possibly the day would come where she had to be Czarina. Avantasia couldn't find loneliness in her chambers, for her twin sister, Glandifora, would pester her until she would come out to play.
On a day with cloudy skies, the somber princess stumbled into a graveyard deep in the forest. Wandering into the place of the dead, Avantasia discovered an old cathedral to which the graves belonged. When she entered the cathedral, the princess came upon a coffin. Inside was a man, dressed like a jester from the 16th century. On his face, he wore a strange mask that covered his eyes, and when young Avantasia took the mask off, he came to life. The jester, calling himself Lucius, thanked the princess for waking him from his sleep. The mask kept him sealed in a sleep that would've been eternity if she hadn't come along. Lucius told Avantasia that as a gift for waking him, she could have the old cathedal all to herself, and gave her a beautiful gown that was nearly 100 years old.
Lucius went his own way, and Avantasia decided to live there. One day she discovered iron gates all along the perimeter of the graveyard. She couldn't leave. Soon, all knowledge in the cold, dark coutry of the princess dissapeared.
Through out the country, strange creatures began crawling out of the bogs. They were known as bog bodies, but formally called fext, slavic for "undead". The fext began brutally killing and dismembering humans. The churches were sending out agents of God to kill the fext. These agents were called Bozaloshtsh.
