Watercolor Journal: Rainy Day

I bought a bunch of watercolor art supplies from 5 Below, including a new watercolor paint set, a paint pad, paint brushes, and some chameleon wc paints. I'm tryna create at least one painting per day, or when the inspiration strikes. I've started using the paint pad as a watercolor journal to test out techniques and tutorials, or experimental art.

This is the painting I made yesterday. I began painting at noon and finished around 7 pm.

I think carefree art journals are really therapeutic, almost meditative! It allows me to paint things I normally wouldn't paint with little commitment or concern over judgement. My regular art is comics or fantasy shit, so I don't often get the opportunity to paint landscapes or bubbles or whatever. I always thought that backgrounds were my weakness, so this lets me practice without pressure.

My painting doesn't look a thing like the reference pic I found on Pinterest. I blame my cheap paints. They lack the pigment to build depth and they lacked color variety so I had to improvise. I used the 38pc watercolor set in a tin box, but so many of the colors feel like repeats. There are like 5 blues that are exactly the same. Once I burn through this watercolor set, I'm investing in a full Paul Rubens set.

Because of the lack of pigment in these paints, I couldn't build the color that the reference pic had. That wasn't a big issue for me tho because I was gonna eff it all up anyways using the chameleon watercolors! The shimmery effect of the chameleon paints looks best in person. I used the Pearl color for the rain drops, as well as splatters of white acrylic paint.
