Oh Toya!! I'm glad you saw this post! It is interesting huh?
Yeah definitely! It made me so shocked at first, but it is neat if Miyazaki made it into a tribute for the girls or something.
Yes, you should! I watched it a lot last year with my brother, and then this year when I rewatched it again, it actually didn't seem as creepy as this theory makes it sound ^^'
I know right!! I saw some creepy picture of him too and now it makes sense. But I still don't like that people have made creepy pictures of him since even if he is supposed to be related to death, he's much nicer as a friendly fuzzy Forest Spirit!
Yeah same here, the bath house hinted it. I also rewatched Spirited Away for the first time since I saw it a few years ago when I first got into anime! It was great again!! But definitely weird xD
Thats a good idea xD My little brother found out about it since he tried to read my post over my should :/ I told him a bit but not much and I think he just didn't care much. He'll never think anything different about Totoro! I told KK and my other sister tho, and KK thought it was interesting but my other sister thinks its stupid xD But like I said, if you rewatch MNT tho, you will see there's only a couple questionable scenes but its much more innocent then it seems after looking at this theory!

you know I didn't see this post before until right now.
ah man Jen, that's just plain out creepy and sad, but really interesting at the same time.
I'll have to re-watch the movie again to see remember what happened in it, I saw it like 5 years ago? so my mind is fuzzy. XD
anywho I looked up the case that related to this and I can see come connections, but Miyazaki really turned it into a light hearted story if he got influenced by the case.
also seeing this post, explains some creepy pictures I had seen of Totoro, but I never even gave them second thoughts.
also I took a look at spirited away too and I have to admit, I kinda had a feeling that it was going to head into that direction. I don't I guess it's because the idea of the bath house?
whelp I'm going to keep this stuffs to myself since I don't want to ruin the image to these films to my siblings, they really like the miyazaki movies, and I do to, but I won't change my mind cause these things.

Yeah, don't worry^^ I'm a lot more cheerful about Totoro now that I've rewatched it... It seems like the similarities could be like a tribute to those other girls from the Sayama incident? but definitely not the main storyline.
LOL I'm rewatching it right now! And its not seeming as morbid as it seemed after I read this other theory x) So don't worry! It gives a lot of room for people to believe what they want, even tho the coincidences are interesting. ;)
Sorry for my late comment!
I'm rewatching Totoro right now x) Its going well! Actually I'm not thinking so much of this theory, tho I guess the ending hasn't really happened yet either... Its the part when they're waiting for the bus in the rain xD
OH I bet your Totoro toy is super cute! I like that way of thinking of him^^ I think the other storyline from this theory is interesting but nothing more.
I plan on re watching it too, I've made myself a totoro toy a few months ago and for two people I know, I'm torn, I should tell them about this or not or just say that the totoro Spirit that protects (if that's the right word for it) childrens souls ^^
Courage isnt a matter of not being afraid, Its being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway!
Yeah, I keep rethinking about this but the coincidences are too close to get away from it, even tho the sandal in the pond is different then Mei's actual sandals which is a big X across the theory that she drowned. I don't know what to think now either, since mulling over it. But I did order the movie again from my library to rewatch it with all the other Ghibli films this summer!
Yes for sure!
Yeah you're right :/ Maybe it'll sit better with us after we rewatch the movie!
:D Yeah, I actually don't think she was as involved with prostitution, just the plot was. So thats ok! xD
hehe
good idea I try to borrow it, too :) And then I watched it with an other look :O
Ikr xD I guess u don't know how to interpret him now :/ It's more difficult now
Thanks jen :) ♥
I love both *-* don't care that maybe chihiro was prostitue :/
It could have happend but like it's been mentioned there is too much of a coincidence
I'm not creeped out as much now, I just don't know how to feel at the momment
you're welcome ^^
Courage isnt a matter of not being afraid, Its being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway!
Yeah I agree with you, Ellenor :) I think thats a neat way, to think it was a tribute to them too.
And I know what you're saying, I've even done that before too. It makes sense that it could have happened that way, I think
Same here, I felt more strongly about Totoro's theory. I'm sorry if it bothered you! I've gotten past the initial shock now so I'm trying to just see how I feel about this personally.
Oh no, thats horrible!!! Don't think too much about it!
Its totally fine, thankyou for taking the time to check this out and leave a comment^^
Yeah for sure... O_O
I'm sorry!! Just make the story be however you want it to be like^^ Thats what I'm telling my little brother now that he's found out about this..
I suppose it could be seen as a tribute to the little girls or happier ending that should have been for the actual girls?
Although it could also be that the Miyazaki had subconsciously retained the information of the incident and then made the movie, because sometimes you could have heard about something in the past but can be unsure whether you've made them up or not, because that happened with names and terms in Harry Potter, J.K.Rowling thought she had made them up but they had actually been in common use in the past. I know there is a big jump between the two but never mind.
Though the one about 'Spirited away' didn't seem to faze me as much the 'my neighbour totoro' did.
All I know is that I'll have an even harder time falling asleep tonight because of this and the fact I've just woken up from a nightmare with Ian Brady in it
Interesting article all the same and sorry for the long comment
Courage isnt a matter of not being afraid, Its being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway!
I didn't know Miyazaki put stuff like that in his films... then again, I did know about Princess Mononoke and how violent it could get.
You're right about Spirited Away.
Yeah, I think I'll go read some manga and get my mind off it.
Yeah you're right!! Thats a good way to think.. PLus the sandal in the pond doesn't match up with Mei's actual sandals in the first place. But I can't help but thinkg Miyazaki got some sort of inspiration from the Sayama case for this movie!
Haha ;)
I KNOW RIGHT?! >U< Its crazy!
Yeah I know what you mean. Same here, its been about 3 years since I saw Spirited Away and I saw Totoro last year. I was SO looking forward to rewatching them, and I still am... but its weird to find out this! I know, its like unbelievable! But Miyazaki always puts stuff like this in his stories... It was funny since I thought MNT was the most innocent of them all! I was so wrong about that. Like, even Princess Mononoke shows the extent of his brilliant storytelling and even the violence he could bring on screen right? I'm still like WOW but I think this is amazing too! and definitely creepy!
Yeah. I'm not as shocked with Spirited Away, maybe since I heard about it before, but I'm a bit more bothered about it? I feel like its odd to have prostitution at its base... but then again, I guess its just as odd having a murder case involved with MNT xP
You got that right!! Thats how I felt when I first heard about this yesterday!! Yes, definitely do so... Its taken a while for me to settle with it. And still... I wanted to do a drawing with me and Totoro. Second guessing that now!!
Wow...I'm not sure about this theory. Yes there's a lot of evidences but I'm pretty sure the girls didn't die. Yes they went on the cat bus (the supposed Death Carriage) but they got out and in the end they met Granny and her grandson at the end and they were. But I wouldn't mind Totoro being the Death God XD
I totally agree!! I can only wish to be at least half of how awesome and talented he is! LOL I know what you mean... I found Totoro to be mre surprising o_O
I'm glad!! I won't either... though I was thinking of doing a Totoro drawing of Totoro and I.. and now I'm second guessing that XD
Me too. I want to buy them, but I don't know where. And so I just borrow them from my library during the summer :D
No problem!! I'm glad that its not old news yet since I was so shocked at first xD
Its so nice, I love it!! Haku <3
I cannot believe this! I just can't!
I've seen both Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro, and though it's been a couple years since, they're both pretty vivid in my mind (whether that be from reading about the theories or not).
It does make sense, what was said about the sandals, catbus, and the girl that committed suicide. But I just can't see Miyazaki putting something like this in MNT! As for Spirited Away, that's extremely creepy. But it makes sense, from the article I read, about the bath house and Yubaba giving Chihiro a different name.
Gyaa, so creepy... it's like everything I knew aobut those movies was a lie.
I'll have to sit on this for a while. My brain is having a hard time processing this.
But if the story behind the stories are right, I have to admire how miyazaki can change this into so sweet and adorable movies for children That spirited away deals with prostutition don't bother me, now I'm hardy :b I thought there would come something worse... but still I'm a little bit dazed
I guess I won't stop loving totoro XD I want to rewatch it too :) but i have to wait til it comes in free tv or i have enough mones to buy me the blu - ray version ^^
But still I have to assimilate this infos
Also thanks from me for uploading this :)
I always love to know more ^o^
yep it is :)
A lot story's aren't soft and sweet I don't know if I believe this lol but it's a possibility XD it does seem to match the incident but my gosh this is just wow :O
Yay I'm glad you saw this post!! I thought you'd find it interesting too!!
Totally, thats right! I also believe that. They said the incident happened in 1963 and Miyazaki got into the animation business at 1964, so he could have been very affected by it. Also I think he puts parts of his own life into his work sometime too.
Haha <3 Yeah they are so cool and cute, no matter what they're supposed to be! Yeah! *highfives* I noticed that many people really didn't like this though, fairytales always have to have a happy ending :/ And maybe this one still does! But its not all fluffy, u know? And totally, its so much more deeper this way!
It might take a while to clear^^" I'm still thinking about this since yesterday and just thrilled with shock XD
IKR? I was too!
Ugh same here as well... I feel a bit weird now that it could be interpreted as a tale of death >3< Yeah I was really looking forward to rewatching it this year! I still want to watch it, but now it seems like its... tainted a bit.
Yeah for sure!! And its crazy cuz Studio Ghibli says its not true. But its understandable why they'd say that since this story is 'supposed' to be happy and light. I totally agree!
I know! I was actually wondering about it after seeing it the first time since it seemed deeper in some way.
Sure, here is a link about it! There is also more info if you google 'Spirited Away theory'.
Is your icon from Spirited Away? :3
Wow, just wow. That kind of blew my mind! Thank you for sharing this. I can see the similarities as well and the idea of Totoro being death is kind of interesting to me as he also brought life in the movie, like when he made the tree although it grew really fast. I can see the relationship between the ideas and maybe Miyazaki hoped to honor the deaths in a nice and light way. I honestly wouldn't mind dying if I got to ride the cat bus and meet Totoro~ What? I didn't say anything. But no, I really like this idea and it makes the lovable lighthearted movie more enjoyable and deepens the story, like you said.
Man... my mind is still blown...
damn I'm pretty shooked
Now I will watched with a different perspektive and i donnu if this will be still one of my favorite movie :/ ... I have to see it and it would be never the same
But I also think that they are too much references between the movie and the incident :/ And still totoro is a lovely creature also when he brings the death
Never thought that their could be so much more the story and I wanted to know about spirited away xD do u have link Jen ? I'm too curious
