I haven't tried it with graphite pencils, but you can certainly experiment! I know with me personally, I have this weird condition of sorts where using graphite pencil without a cover sheet (and sometimes with) results in massive smudging because of the composition of my body, so maybe you could replicate the smudging with water. Ticonderoga pencils are the smudgiest kind, in my opinion, if you wanna try it.
