I agree with Angel Zakuro--I think pretty much anyone who receives an unexpected gift, no matter how dense, will think "Aw crap, I f'ed up--I really need to get something nice for them in exchange." If the two of you haven't exchanged presents at all in the past, it's possible he just fell into the trap of thinking you're not someone who enjoys the tradition.
Aww. *hugs* Don't feel bad for writing all this out! And don't be ashamed to be a girl! XD I don't think this whole situation is exclusive to girl feelings though. Guys can get this way, too. :)
I, too, am not one for gift giving. I'm simply too lazy to give anyone a gift, and so I really don't expect any back. This year, the only thing I got from a friend were these chocolate covered pretzels, but she made enough and gave them to everyone she knew. I hardly EVER get gifts from any friends...and yeah, it does make me feel sorta left out or not loved that much, but it's really my fault, too. >.< Since I've never given any.
Have you given him gifts before? Or will this be your first time? Perhaps you should give it to him early, but don't say anything like "I want one back." Just wait. He'll probably feel that since you gave him one, it would be appropriate to give you one in return. :3 Don't need to be forceful!
And again, I Don't think all guys are like this. A lot of guys are really dense...but I'm sure there are some that aren't, lol. Maybe he just thinks that you don't want one? I don't know. Just do what you think is right. ^^; *hugs* And try to cheer up!!!
Hmm. Thanks for the advice! I've always felt that the point of gifts is "to be nice," but I guess it felt good to hear it from someone else. :)
I guess I felt bad largely because this other friend would have gotten a nice gift from him, but I wouldn't have. And if I just ask, he would probably do the same for me, but... that really isn't my style. I guess I'll just suck it up and stick to my guns. :)
Well I don't know about other guys, but personally I just don't like gift exchanges. I feel like I'm being a hassle to people when they get me gifts, even when I say specifically that they don't have too.
I have this one friend that gets me gifts every year for Christmas, but I never give her anything in return. I tell her every year that she really doesn't need to get me anything, but she does anyways.
I do feel bad that I don't give her anything in return, but...I don't know, I just feel that since I didn't ask for anything, I shouldn't have to worry about giving other people things.
Maybe I'm just heartless and cold :P
For you, I don't know. Personally I'd be kinda really weirded out if someone I know was like, "I EXPECT YOU TO GET ME SOMETHING. HERE'S YOURS." The point of gifts is to be nice right? Well forcing someone into a gift exchange really isn't that nice, lol.
I do see where you're coming from, absolutely. If I was going to give someone a gift, then I'd sure expect something back. Maybe that's just why I only give gifts to those people that I know will reciprocate :P
Basically, I don't know if it's just a guy thing, but when it comes to gifts between friends, I just say no. It just plain well complicates things. When it comes to relationship, of course you get gifts though.
In the end, it's your call. Talk to him if you feel the need to.

I'd rather see in shades of gray.
