It's relatively easy to understand as a standalone story, IMO, though the significance of some events will be lost. Chronologically, 358/2 Days is a prequel to KH2, so the ending will also seem like a cliffhanger.
If you do decide to play the game, I used this FAQ guide while playing, and it has a good backstory section at the top that you can read. It even helped me understand some things I didn't quite get in the previous games. ^^;
So I'm guessing you already have an idea of what this game's about? :3
It is sad, but not overwhelmingly so. And I think I found parts of the story sad largely b/c I already knew of org13 & esp. axel's fates in KH2. (i.e. they all get screwed over)

Thanks ^^ I'll keep those points in mind if I do buy the game *smiles*

I'm thinking of playing that game sometime... Although I don't have any grasp of the preceding games storylines... I may well get lost and confused...

I've been intrigued by this game but simultaneously worried that it would make me way too sad. ^^;;
