Yeah, in the tutorial, the guy only changes the blending mode, so the effect is the same as adding another layer. From what I can tell, the blending effects are generally the same, except for when you mess with the other features on apply image, particularly the channels.
*commenting on this late* I read that tutorial and uh...isn't it just the same as putting one image over the other and setting the layer style to Overlay? Not to knock it or anything (God knows I love me my layer stules), but that seems to be the gist of it. Or maybe Apply Image does some wizardry that I'm not aware of.
The Danbo one's cute.
But regarding that top image - I noticed interlacing lines on it, so you're theory of a projection or however may be correct. The one of the girls has that look like someone took a picture of a computer screen or something. Pshaw mister "one photo".
Yeah, I sort of had the same idea! I was thinking he maybe has one picture prepared beforehand and printed on a transparent material. Like in the photo in the post, the picture of the girls kissing was printed on a transparent material and covers the lens' view.
I'm not sure how he does that, but if I were to try I'd go for the most obvious way: using two images projected onto one another on a wall, then photographing it. Something about the light patterns in that picture suggest something like that is at work there.
But darnit, now I'm tempted to do the same sort of thing with my own photographs!

From what I've read the first 25-ish chapters of the manga all take place before the time jump. The anime is going at a pretty slow pace, so it looks like it will probably only cover the first arc. But feel free to wait until the end of the season; that's probably what I would've done had I been spoiled earlier.
And yeah, I saw a review on the ANN Summer Preview Guide that said something about the ending, but I skipped over it at the time. I guess there's nothing stopping me from reading it now. ._.;
I used this tutorial. You have to use images of the same size, so it's limiting in that sense. But it's otherwise pretty straightforward and a lot easier to use than some other blending techniques I've come across. :)
Never seen the show so...I wouldn't know a thing. XD; But I hate it when endings are spoiled. D:
Is the first photo one of the guy's that you mentioned? If so, well, I don't think it's that great...and...I have no idea how you can take only one photo and get that out of it. NO Idea.
But I adore what you did on photoshop. <3333 My goodness. <33 They're amazing. D: I've never got into photomanips like that...then again, I haven't really tried. Tutorial maybe? ;) I gave you mine on vectors, so how about you tell me how you did these? I think they're super pretty!!
Yeah, seeing as how it's only gonna be 11 eps long, it looks like there's a good chance the story won't go into Bad Territory just yet. I think I'll pass on the 2nd season if it ever comes into being. x_x

Yeah, I haven't had the ending spoiled, but I have read a ton of negative reactions to it, so, uh, I can only hope that the anime stops before then if it's really that bad. (noitaminA series don't usually go that far into their manga counterparts, so I guess we're safe.)
