For whatever reason, it seems like the western nations need some kind of adversary to define themselves against. From the '50s onwards, it was the Red Scare with the former USSR, now it seems to be China's turn.
In Canada, it turns up here too. Sometimes the political rhetoric is framed in economic terms, regarding how our government should block a takeover of a Canadian oil company by a Chinese government owned company. Again, there's another news item pondering the rational behind a company here hiring Chinese workers, deeming it a "mass importation". (Never mind that these workers are experienced.) And again, this time recognizing the anti-China stance underlying most of these moves, an article today made that underlying attitude clear with its title: "Time to rein in the China bashing".
Cutting off ties with the 2nd largest economy in the world isn't a smart thing to do, and the general mindset of the foreign invasion and takeover that's gripped sections of western thinking and attitudes isn't helpful either.
