Well, I imagine that people have a variety of reasons for feeling uncomfortable when others break gender norms. Though I have met people in the past who are against the LGBT movement, but are very active in helping the poor, so sometimes it really is just a difference in values.
If I have kids in the future, I plan to raise them similarly. I don't think one even has to be super conscious of things like gender roles in order to raise someone in a "gender neutral" way; really the most important thing is just to never make your child feel like they are bad or strange just because they don't look or act a certain way. In retrospect, I'm glad that I never let it get to me too much when my grandma scolded me for "not dressing as well as other girls" when I was little. I've always thought of myself as being a natural weirdo because of little things like that, but it's only recently that I've realized there really wasn't anything weird about me at all.
Timechaser brought up an interesting tidbit a while back where he noted that "as late as the 1800s, very young boys were sometimes put in dresses by their parents, especially for pictures or paintings." And at that same time period, it was socially unacceptable for girls to wear pants. Who decides these rules and why do they sometimes change over time?
And why do the rules sometimes change across cultures? You brought up kilts, and in the past, I've mentioned that it is common for heterosexual male celebrities in Japan and Korea to regularly wear eyeliner or beauty cream. Why is it okay over there but not here? It all just feels so arbitrary, I suppose I can't help but question it.
I prefer if boys stay boys and girls stay girls. Well you know what I mean...yeah girls can wear pants but boys should refrain from dresses and skirts cept kilts...cause real men wear kilts....anyways I'm derailing...
Who knows, perhaps they were practicing stage make up on each other. Boys need make up for drama just as much as girls do. The guy was just very disgusting....

I'm pretty sure it took me until high school to at least start not being a fucking idiot, and I grew up in a decent environment. So I dunno. At least part of it has to be social influences, though.
