Yeah, I agree! The book really puts the characters in a different light, and I can't picture the Phantom being as ugly as he's described in the book since Gerard Butler played him in the movie. XD But I can definitely say I enjoy both equally! They have their own good points.

Ha, I got my hands on the book after Longman (the publishing house) opened a stand in my former high school. I wasn't that eager to read it but I thought I should since I enjoyed the movie. On one hand, the book is more disturbing and raw; on the other, the movie is more romantic and heavily "cosmeticized". In the end I stuck to the movie, but the mirror room scene in the book really kept me on edge :D
Movie: loathed Raoul, he was useless and wimpy. Loved Gerry, of course. I definitely wouldn't think he was hideous. Mrow.
Good review, sums up everything one needs to know about the book and movie without being spoiled :]

I need to read this!! I love the musical and the film, and only recently realized there was a book. I heard a presentation on it during an Honors conference, and it's even more on my list after reading your review.
