If Piccolo's a human, he's gonna be super-deformed in the face. Going by the James Marsters stuff, he's wearing a lot of prosthetics and stuff, so he's gonna be at least something.
That's all well and good, but I think of the fans of DBZ out there, there are ones that are divided. Some are so devoted to the original, this one is too different and they think it is not true to the show at all (Goku a high school student? Piccalo a human?)and will snub it. The others who would be interested because of the show don't have anywhere near enough numbers to carry a movie to box office gold. We otaku number many, but there are not enough of us to make a movie successful, even if we each saw it 3 times in one weekend.
I think the reason Speed Racer tanked is because its not that special of a anime other then the fact that is came out in the 1960 I mean my dad is a fan (he's 47) but most otaku today are not that really. Dragon Ball was my first shonen anime and to a lot of people it still holds a special place in there hearts so I do believe Dragon Ball will do much better.
Wowzers, he looks like Elijah Wood. O.O I for one have never seen Dragon Ball, so I don't exactly have any vested interest in it, but I hope it does a better job at the adaptation than seems to be expected. It's a bummer when something so widely known and recognized isn't treated with proper respect.

The American audience isn't really geared for this type of thing, and most people don't want to see a movie with a lot of explosions (well, action movie) unless they're invested in the characters (i.e. The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones). I can see this as being marketed like Speed Racer, i.e. cool visual affects and lots of toys.
Honestly, if this movie had come out before Speed Racer it might have had a chance (I say this without having seen a trailer or anything), but people are now going to associate "old" anime with crappy movie-making.
Plus some of us that watched the original think that it's such a departure from what we're used to, it's not worth it.

Maybe they'll both be late bloomers in the theatres. That's what I hope, anyways.

Yeah, I saw this on another page. Honestly, it could have been much much worse. Like with Justin Chatwin making a Destructo Disk or something.
But I'd be really surprised if this movie doesn't tank like Speed Racer did.
