My dad is really into model making too! He used to have a huge collection - before he had kids. We accidentally destroyed his models by using them with our GI Joes.
Needless to say, we've spent a lot of time making it up to him. We even booked him a flight on an authentic WWII plane. (I forget which!) The best part about his flight was the conversation with his pilot. She started to tell my dad the history of the plane, and he ended up telling her even more!

I know in my "innocent" youthful days, I destroyed some of my own models. Back then, you could play with them and not look like a fool.
Also, great story. It's always fun to get an aviation enthusiast talking about airplanes. What I'd give to fly in an old WWII plane.

@TimeChaser:
Having to smell all the fumes ain't no fun, either. Ventilation is the key.
However, I could build Mustangs forever. I love that plane.

Maybe that's why I never got into model building. Once its done, all the fun is gone and you just sit there and look at it. :P
Mmm, gotta love the Mustang...
