The basic idea is it's a fundamental particle that helps give mass to other particles. As you can tell by that number, 125 GeV, the boson they've discovered is quite massive. Now that they've claimed a discovery (the 5 sigma part) of a Higgs-like particle, scientists are that much closer to understanding how the Universe "clumped together" moments after the Big Bang. Without mass, we'd all be a collection of particles here and there!
I stayed up pretty late that night following it live on Twitter. I didn't go to bed until 3:30 AM, since CERN made the announcement around 2:00 AM my time on July 4. To say the least, it might have been the greatest day I've ever had on Twitter - or social media for that matter. I should blog about it sometime.
I wish I knew more about the Higgs boson, but I only know the surface stuff. The important thing is that's certainly something to smile about because we're definitely making progress! I was discussing it with a friend of mine and somehow it got into the likeness of Nick Fury trying to understand and harness the power of the tesseract.
