You have a knack with words. One that should take you very far if you use it right.
I have the hopefully unique fortune to know every one of those stereotypes you just put labels to (don't worry, that's not always a bad thing). I for one am a "Realistic" cosplayer, when the mood hits me. Problem is, just how many cool dark hair, dark eyed, bearded, glasses wearing characters are out there? Answer: Maes Hughes. I'm also lucky in the fact that he wasn't only seen in uniform. Casual wear of a simple suit makes for an easy replication. Also, I get to throw around pictures of family members and brag about their cuteness to absolutely anyone and they usually get the reference and play along (Thank you to Emily and Rachel at Nekocon should you somehow be reading this).
Woah, I've put way too much text into one comment for my standards. I look forward to reading more of your articles.
PS: "Have I told you just how cute my daughter is?"
I'm not sure which category I fit into. My first cosplay attempt was the fangirl/boy cosplay, where I cosplayed Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist, than I attempted realistic when I dressed as Saya Otanashi from Blood+ and now I'm working on accurate cosplay, Im cosplaying Lia de Beaumont from Le Chevalier D'Eon. So maybe I'm a roving cosplayer?
ROCK ON BOB!!!!! Hahaha. This was too cute. I had my first cosplay about a month or two ago. MomoCon 08 was fun! I cos'd as L and had an "L-twin" we never found out each others names, but we could recognize the other amongst the 5 billion other Ls. Twas fun...Thanks for the article!
Nice article!
Although I have only cosplayed one character, for the most part I've found that I fall into the Dreamer category. I'm not the same gender, height, or weight as my character (Ishida, I'm too short and slightly chubby). I could've chosen to be the realist and cosplay Rukia or Orihime, but cosplaying Ishida seemed more fun to me.
Quite frankly,I would say I'm The Realistic Cosplayer,if one have to pick a label.
Your article is very well written and proves a good point:
Cosplay is still cosplay,no matter what the fandom.
Our poor, poor Dreamer friend Bob. *shakes head sadly*
I like your article a lot, it tells the truth (as far as I know) about cosplaying. It gives good examples that most people will get (I know I did). Thanks for writing this! :]
From what I experienced, us cosplayers may be the weirdest bunch of otakudom. Not that it's a bad thing. I dress up as Kakashi during specific school events and, strangely, I get more compliments than insults.
