I never played FFII for NA's SNES (didn't own one), but we did buy Final Fantasy: Chronicles which had the hard version of FFIV. This was a few years back and I can't give you any concrete numbers . . . but I can attest that Zeromus freakin' worked me a crapload of times before I finally got into the groove to beat him - and yes, eventually I DID spend many hours grinding my levels up around the final save point before finally killing him on like, my 4th or 5th try.
So I dunno, I'd never had such a problem with a Final Fantasy boss like that ever before (not counting VIII which took about 3 tries, but that was more my fault since leveling up wasn't such a big deal for that one). Or, maybe I just suck at games; either way, that's my account of the hard version of FFIV, take it however you will.
And for the record, Yu Yevon in FFX never had a chance once the series broke past the 9999 damage limit.
