She really does need a new PC, but an i5 or i7 would be overkill since most all she uses it for is web browsing. An i3 2100 with its on-chip graphics or even a cheap dual core Celeron and graphics card would be plenty, and the extra money would be better spent on 4 GB of decent speed RAM.

Good things comes 2 those who wait, The things you lost will always replace something better..
Set it to custom and enter how many MB you want to use. (Recommended tends to be about 1.5x the amount of physical memory you have, but I use more for systems with very little.) It's generally a good idea to set both initial and max size to the same thing so it doesn't have to allocate the difference later, and you won't try to fill your hard drive fuller than you should because the space will already be taken up.
I used AVG for quite a while and it didn't seem too bad until it started screwing with some online games and making them crash, and that was the end of that. A while later, I got Avira and was impressed by how low profile it was in its normal background HDD read/write scanning and how much faster the updates were.

Don't worry, I still love you. I just might love you a little less if I were to ever work on your PC.

How does one boost virtual memory on an XP? It may help my ancient desktop run smoothly.

I'm actually pretty happy with AVG but I've never tried running it on a low-end PC so I can't comment there.

Low memory chokes just about anything these days. At least you got the problem fixed, even if it was a royal pain in the ass.
In the name of the tune I will punish you!
