They certainly are feared, though because we know most (though not all) the facts about them, it gives people peace of mind. Facts= security. The unknown is daunting and something to be cautious of.
I'm just trying to point out the fact that other diseases are not feared, even though they are far more serious. Just becuase people haven't heard of this before, they fear it, without knowing all the facts
I'm so tired of the swine flu, because of the damn media my finals are getting moved a week ahead (so my last week of school is most likely next week).
The media most likely got tired of Obama because his first 100 days so they wanted something else to milk the crap out of. I'm not dreading it, I am just annoyed. I was told my theatre instructor this "I'm not getting the swine flu because my allergies would get jealous" LOL.
It similar to the bird flu, there were few cases (if any) here in the U.S. and shortly after that the bird flu died. The bird flu was another thing that the media hyped over. Another good example was the West Nile Virus, OMG DO NOT GO OUTSIDE!

People always take precautions when it comes to new viruses. Why? Because they do have different attributes, can affect people differently, and have different ways of evolving. So a new disease showing up is a pretty big deal, especially if it originated from another species. And you see how fast other viruses like the common flu is able to evolve. There are new strains all the time. People want to stop this one in its tracks before it becomes as widespread. Of course the media is going to have a field day with it, but there are precautions to take.
Also, comparing this to AIDS is rather pointless, seeing as it isn't spread through everyday contact (touching, coughing, sneezing, etc). Neither is cancer. And there are countless ways to take care of a cold, despite its rapid evolution rate. It's just a matter of keeping up with it. As I said before, the last thing professionals need is one more disease to have to keep track of.
I agree, the hype about the spread of Swine Flu is rather out of control right now. However, there are points to it. See, the thing is that this particular virus is able to jump from animals to humans. Now, Pigs are incredibly similar to humans anyway, but the thought that something is able to infect different species is quite scary.
Really, the media is blowing this all out of proportion (like it always does) and it's not that big a deal. However, they just want everyone to be on the look out for the virus and be prepared.
We're only human and, logically, some of us will jump to conclusions and that will result in wide-spread panic. Then, the panic and fear spread like wildfire and VOILA! The media grabs hold of it and wants only to help their ratings.
So, the REAL message to all people should be: Use the media and news ONLY to track where the virus is and be prepared should you be travelling to those areas. Keep clean and healthy.
But, I do still agree. They are just blowing this out of proportion...
