I just tried quickly with gimp and it seems to work exactly the same about layers and blending modes so don't worry ;)

That's right that one of your icons (the 4th I think) reminded me of Ritona's works lol
Here I just added a layer and color it with a gradient red with the blending mode lighten. :)
