Well, it's a good thing there were none of those in the cons I've been to... *phew*
Anyway, I also think that they should ban those things... Either that, or set up a butt-slapping patrol or something. Slap the butts of slappers!! Wooo!
I've seen a paddle of those before through a online friend and although it seemed cool, I never understood the reason for it except now. Seriously, its ridiculous to go around and smack people for such a lame excuse. Its not even funny, at all and as you said people can get seriously hurt by it. I hope its banned or at least after you buy it go store it in your car.
They're banned at the Vancouver convention already, yeah. I mean seriously, that's a solid hunk of wood! Well-intentioned ass-slapping abuse or not, there's just way too many liabilities with something that solid - it's not quite a baseball bat (which are also banned), but they're fairly close. So yeah, banned, and I'm not sad about that.
That said . . . I motion we skip right past the paddles and go straight into manufacturing "Dumbass" morning stars. That'd learn 'em . . .
I am glad that I haven't seen one and their destructiveness. I think that I would buy one of your paddles if you ever made one. But Shouldn't the conventions staff see that people are getting assaulted and put a stop to that?
You know that someone truly cares when they brick you like that. -AZ
I think they're kinda funny in a way. Just until kids start gettin' hit by them. They're neat ideas for friends to play around with but I really dont think girls should be hitting 'hot guys' on the ass with them. I like that some conventions have required that they take them to their hotel room once bought. Banning's a little harsh because I personally haven't seen too many innocents with the yaoi paddles. But if it does get too out of hand then they should be banned all together. They are funny, entertaining items that need to be used with caution (though I dont want one xD )
o_0 Uh, wow. I've never been to a con before, so I'd never heard of this until now! I guess some of the yoai fangirls get more into it then I thought! I mean, I knew some went a little over board with their fan art sometimes, but running around and hitting innocent unsuspecting people?! That's just - weird! How can they get away with that?! It sounds like it should be illagal!
Very interesting and fun to read artical! *hugs*

Honestly, I think yaoi paddles have just become the "In thing" to get for BL fangirls @ anime cons. Like... they don't even think about why they buy the thing anymore; they just do it because, hey, they're at an anime convention, they like yaoi, and they have a crapload of money to blow, so why not?
At least, I'm quite sure that was the reasoning of a cousin of mine when she bought one at AX2007. xD
Funny you should mention that. If you ever get the chance, ask Greg Ayers about the panel he did at a convention where a Mother thought that Yaoi stood for Young Artistic Outgoing Individuals.
You should make the paddle. Than go around and hit people you see using the Yaoi paddles on others. This was a very great writing! I mean seriously! These people get Shounen-Ai and Yaoi mixed up so much. If the tweens and teen's mothers knew what it was and cared, this probably wouldn't be such a big thing.
I myself saw them at my first ACen a couple years ago, and was freaked out by them. I mean, seriously...I don't want to be on the receiving end of a bad swing. I'm also certain it's a great contributor as to why I can't get one of my guy friends to come to the con with me, he's afraid of these psycho tween fangirls with yaoi paddles.
I agree as well. They're nothing but a nuisance. My first ACen, years ago, a friend of mine bought one and smacked me with it, without asking. She tried again, and I tried to move out of the way, and got cracked across the knuckles.
I don't think they should be completely banned, but making sure they're not carried around and used is something every con needs to do.

I agree with you Drazzhar, the yaoi paddles should be banned. that idea you had of your own version of the yaoi paddle was pretty funny.

Anwyays, yeah. That needs to be taken care of, man. You can't just go around smacking people.

I totally agree with you. It's all a big marketing tactic to get money.
If you ever do make those paddles of your own, tell me! lol. It would be pretty freakin' funny.
I'd rather see in shades of gray.
