hm I can understand that, I myself have been thinking about it too. I'm trying to develop my own cartoon style without looking at reference but's it's kind of hard.
I've also thinking about taking realism seriously too! XD

I actually had the same notion--Drawing anime for so long and then starting to ADORE cartoon western style art and how quirky it is. I'm not quite there yet, but I'm getting there.
Where I started was reading westernized webcomics and studying/redoing some of their techniques on paper and in my head (the bigger brighter eyes, the crooked smiles, the long quirky body types).
Not there yet, but after about a year of this I've begun to develope a cross of Western and Asian style art. You don't have to start from square one, use what you know and essentially "cross-breed" it with western art! haha
Here's a few webcomics that helped me out, seem to be a great example of the cross-breed thing I was talking about, and are AMAZING.
