I use a few things to rp. I've used Skype, Facebook, text, chatzy.com (but you'd be better off not using that unless you already know of a group, since you can't easily search for active chatrooms there). The sample I sent you was on IMVU. I like using that a lot since you can actually customize your avatar and make it look like your character. But it's hard to do unless you're willing to invest a few bucks in that, unless visuals don't matter for you.
But yeah, what I do is more casual than traditional d&d.

Also, there are some general courtesy things you need to know. Definitely use the OOC brackets as mentioned, otherwise it's confusing. Also, it's nice to ask before jumping into an rp in a chat room. That's not as big of a deal, but a lot of the time you get info on what's going on like the plot, or like races that will and wont work, and stuff like that. But I'd have to say that one of the rudest things you can do is screw up someone's rp. Something like that happened yesterday where I was in the middle of a war scene and this guy came in saying "Oh, someone spar with me! Fight me! I need war!" and then proceeded to try and attack characters that weren't even in battle? My group and I ended up having to leave and find another room, and I called him out on being an ass and he got mad. Even though we'd told him "Hey brochacho, we're in the middle of something. Can you wait five minutes till we're done and then we can work you in?"
Aw thank you! She's a sweetheart. And it's similar to D&D, but there aren't any dice or anything involved usually. I don't know too much about it so I can't do a good comparison, but character sheets are optional too usually. Here's a sample of the one that I'm in the middle of right now if this helps:

Guest_xAzoriax: Welcome :)
jaden2029 he remains silent for a moment slowly bowing with his right hand crossed over his chest speaking with a voice like a dark silk, against the softest skin, of the fairest maiden. "Good evening"
Guest_xAzoriax: -She smiles politely.- What's your name?
jaden2029: Jaden BlackRose
Guest_xAzoriaxGuest_xAzoriax : Azoria Hemlock. It's a pleasure to make your acquaintance.
jaden2029jaden2029 Whisper: the pleasure is all mine lady Hemlock
Guest_xAzoriax: ((Just a heads up, this is one of those groups you have to sign up for. Without signing up you can chill and chat, but you can't attend classes as far as I know. I'm not a mod or anything so you'll have to wait and discuss that with them or the headmistress, legendix.))
Guest_xAzoriax: ((Ah, sorry, just checked the list and apparently you've already signed up. Sorry brochacho))
Guest_xAzoriax: -She tilts her head.- I haven't seen you around before. How long have you been here?
jaden2029jaden2029 Whisper: ((-smirks- it is quite alright))
Guest_heyitskiara has joined the chat
jaden2029: I was just enrolled
Guest_xAzoriax: I see. I must have missed you then.
Guest_xAzoriax: -She heads in, sitting on one of the couches.- Tell me about yourself?
Guest_xAzoriax: ((Hey Kiara <3))
Guest_heyitskiara: ((az my girl <3))
Guest_heyitskiara: how you doin ?
jaden2029: What would you desire to know?
Guest_xAzoriax: -She shrugs.- Whatever you feel like sharing. -She smiles to Kiara.- Hey. I'm well. You?
Guest_heyitskiara: i am good and oh ... hello - she smiles at the guy-
Out of character speech is usually in parenthesis or brackets or something. Here, a guy I haven't seen in the chat came in, but it turns out he'd already signed up for the group. Personally, when people join the chat and I haven't seen them, I assume they don't know how to rp so I greet them OOC.
Hope this helps! If you want, you can practice with me. Plots and combat aren't my strong suit anymore, but I can definitely try to come up with something for us if you like.
