I wouldn't be surprised if that was indeed the case. After all, they even had a "best friend/wedding" event at the end of the last game, where you could send a special card to basically your favorite character and you get to see a unique scene with them.

So, I guess it's all just fanservice in the end. ._.

Honestly, from this post, it sounds like the creators intentionally made everything ridiculously ambiguous so both sides of the Shino-camp could argue their points. (Which, if that is the case, is kind of smart.)

Sad thing about any series is you'll never have a consensus on anything among all fans. I've had to bite my tongue and ignore stuff I object to when dealing with other Doctor Who fans, so I can understand your frustration.
