I initially thought you were talking about generations in anime in general, so that's when my brain went back to the '60s. It's an interesting point that it wasn't generally known as "anime"/there wan't an otaku culture until the '80s.
I actually did ask my Dad who watched Astroboy when he was young and he echoed what I said, he didn't know it was anime or wouldn't have known it was even Japanese made back then.
The concept of Otaku didn't really happen until the 1980s in Japan and it didn't really take off until Akira started it in the west.
Before then you wouldn't know a show was anime unless someone told you, even then the term is much more broader in the 90s than before the era.

Kinda surprised you started with the early 90's here. The U.S. introduced anime with Speed Racer and Kimba on the air back when my parents were kids, so that's when I think of the eras starting in the West.
Anyway, this is interesting! (It's cool seeing your comparisons of the Sailor Moon series by era.) I'll look forward to reading more of your post as you add to it. ^^
