The sad thing about Dot Hack Sign is that Tsukasa's big reveal was actually a good piece of story telling and a great philosophy to explain why we often pick/create certain characters in video games, it's just getting there wasn't worth episodes of boring dialogue.
Sword Art Online told you what was at stake straight away and that got a lot of people invested, it just didn't stay that way, as you said it became uneven.

Funny thing is, I just, within the past two weeks, watched Bunny-girl Senpai. This is one case where I usually wouldn’t watch because of the innuendos/fan service, but the story itself got me invested enough to get past that. Yeah, it’s crazy-convoluted pseudo-science, but I like the psychological aspect of it. It actually reminds me more of Clannad in some respects, and if they’d played the premise as fantasy instead of trying to explain it, it probably would’ve worked better.
On the .hack vs. SAO debate, each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Not gonna say one is better or worse than the other, but I will say that SAO is extremely uneven.
