I'd love to be able to download legitimate anime not long after it aired on Japanese TV. I hate the terrible quality of some fansubs I've come across. One little change in a word, and -- poof! -- it all goes to hell. I guess that would leave the production teams with the extra task of dubbing the anime properly, thus adding another aspect to the production that they would have to look after. I imagine that, at first, some production teams would consider the English dubbing as a merely secondary importance. Overworked staff would not care less about the quality of the dub, leaving us with dubs equal to fansub dubs.
Yeah, and ADV's got 20-30 DVDs you can download from their shop in WMV format (again, all older stuff). I can imagine rights and the time to negotiate them being a problem, yes, but I can also imagine situations where rights just wouldn't be that much of a hurdle (Death Note and Haruhi were examples offered). Yet even in those kinds of cases, this distribution model isn't even in the cards. It's insane that domestic companies haven't taken more steps in this direction - and at this point I think the main question is just whether the madness is on their side or that of the production companies across the pacific.
It's got to be a rights problem. Even ADV and co. have to be aware of the sites that are making fairly massive amounts of money by selling fansub direct download or streaming subscriptions.
Funi has stuff on iTunes IIRC, but it's all older, of course, like Gunslinger Girl.
