We're pretty much the same way with every holiday, unfortunately. Though personally, I rather like halloween. Well, I mostly like the stuff that happens around halloween. Where I live we have a pumpkin festival in october. They close off main street and set up rows and rows of carved pumpkins, and it looks so cool when it gets dark. What's halloween like in your country?
I think Jewish people handle holidays different (thank God) because of the way Jewish culture is. I mean, there's already all these special things you have to do for the different holy days. I mean, if you're Jewish, it's really part of who you are, even if you don't practice Judaism. That's really my main problem with St Patricks Day. The green hat doesn't make you Irish, corned beef (which wasn't even originally Irish, BTW) doesnt make you Irish. The fact that your great granddaddy was from Ireland makes you Irish. If you wanna be Irish, I say, do what I do : wear a discreet, shamrock button on your jacket and be a big stubborn jerk about things you think are stupid. Don't need to wait for March 17th
I think the green has some political connotations. Don't quote me on that.
I didn't celebrate St. Patty's either. I wore pink and didn't go anywhere near a bar. No corned beef for me either.
Your Rosh Hashanah scenario had me very disturbed. Good thing the average American only knows about Hanukkah. I guess the reason people don't do stuff like that is because religion is a more touchy subject than heritage.
If you think St. Patrick's Day is stupid, I read this thing about Columbus Day. Now that was messed up.
Call it karma. Call it luck. Me, I just don't give a... BOUNCE!
Yeah I feel the same about St. Patrick's day too also with other American's holidays. They are all excuses to buy things, to celebrate and be drunk. I mean a little spirit for the holiday isn't so bad. For me, I wore green socks on St. Patrick day. But the thing that irritate me the most is that people make such a big hype about it. Man....think about all of those money that are spent on something so useless like cheap hats. That money could have been use for a better cause. We are definitely in a capitalistic society. Everything has to be made/created for money.
Ikr?! what does all of this have to do with Ireland? -_-
*looking at picture....
Hmm...they might as well paint themselves green.

@pandaman08:
IKR? Seems like we celebrate everything the same way: with consumerism and obnoxiousness. God bless America.
