It is sort of intimidating but lucky for anyone coming into Fate as a newcomer. Thankfully, we have it easier since majority of the media for this series have now been concluded. There are also kind Fate fans who have provided an easy to follow list on HOW to watch the Fate series by order of events and by timelines.
From what I understood, the Fate series have branches. Some stray somewhere at the end of Zero, others from the Stay/Night, or something else entirely due to a choice, consequence, or result of an event within these two or a random spin-off. So because of that aspect, it makes it feel daunting. I can safely say though, as a newcomer, it isn't as bad once you set foot into Fate with a list as a guide. The one I used is this one.

The Fate Series has always kind of been on my radar so to speak...And I've been kind of intimidated to start the series because there is just so much to it. Is Fate/Zero the way to go as a first entry? Some people have also said that Fate/Stay Night is also a way to go...I honestly have no idea. I may try to watch it one of these days. It does look cool as hell though. I'm glad you liked it...and I'm sorry for your loss as well.
