Lately, I've been getting into traditional art. The journey has been full of ups and downs. I mostly blame myself for not keeping constant practice and dedication to drawing in general. Since stopping digital these past couple of months, I haven't been able to create any major pieces that I could be proud of. I thought that, if I went traditional, I would be able to bring myself back in finding that missing passion within. Well, I sort of.
It's been an awkward experience, but I may have found a solution! I recently joined a TTRPG group with people who are around my age with a few members that are older. Together, we started a campaign using the core book, FABULA ULTIMA. It's a neat ttrpg that encourages both player and GM to create a world together and the character's backgrounds tied to that world. The creative factor of this was what helped me find inspiration. It tickled the side of my brain that begged for the creativity I deprived it from. It was enough to kick myself into gear and begin doodling anything that came from it: my character, my peers' characters, and a tad of the scenarios from the campaign. Though they weren't perfect (most were rushed), they managed to make me smile. As we continued each session, the more inclined I felt to draw something down on paper.
Anyway, I started this traditional journey because I realized I never learned the fundamentals right. I allowed digital to give me the comfort of not "needing them" because of tools that made it easy to "cheat". How so? Well, for example, I would use the lasso tool to create shapes for bodies and objects, or use the symmetry tool to create identical lines and so forth. From a digital perspective, it's not really "cheating" but when you attempt to apply the same thing traditionally, you cannot do so. So I wanted to re-educate myself all over! And, good gawd, did I suck!
But, good news, because I went back to the basics, I gradually been building good habits whilst trying to rid of bad ones. The entire journey has been an eye-opener and one that I do not regret initiating.
So I cross my fingers and hope I keep up. Let us hope procrastination and distractions won't be the end of this journey too soon.
