I know its just the Japanese equivalent to the term geek and nerd but it is generally a derogatory term in Japan, and it's the obsessive nature of it that gets the name and what makes headlines and sticks in peoples mind even though it might just be a small percentage of people who like anime and so on.
There is nothing wrong with bring proud of liking anime, good on you for doing that ^^
Courage isnt a matter of not being afraid, Its being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway!
I certainly do hope that people catch on to what I'm proposing. I can certainly use the help though. For instance, I'm a digital artist, I feel that I'm lacking in traditional media section. Therefore, I can't cover all of the bases. Cough, cough, groovy I need you, cough cough*.
Anywhooo. I'm kind of worried that possibly the proposal might not work. One reason is that I'm not as popular as other artists here on this site. If I was to put those resources in my "Comic" section (I feel that the comic section is the best place to put it), many will have a hard time finding it. Also, this is where I will need other members help.
Another reason is motivation. You know, including myself, at times we are usually happy with the level of talent that we have. That being said, how often do that the artists here on this site, feel that they need to improve?
Lastly, Lurking does not help at all. Ever see an accident on the highway? I can tell you that there are way more rubberneckers/observers than people who are willing to get out of their car and help.
What I really don't want is fire from the members here. "Why is he making this?", "This guide thing is making me feel inferior.", "The art isn't good and he thinks he knows everything"."These guides aren't correct." Well, I need the communication here. I feel that if there are other members chiming in, it will feel more of a "group" cause than it just being me trying to pass time. Basically, it will be legit. The whole point is actually drive the community through feedback and participation.
Ultimately, I'd like that everyone here to take part of it and claim it as their own. That this project was built for the members, by the members, and not just me.
I'm glad that you said that you'll support the project. However, What this project needs is participation from the members here. Lots of members. you and I could be a start.
Imma try and post some things later today and re-write the description to fit the new direction. if not, soon.
BTW if anyone else here would like to discuss this. Drop a line.
I think a lot of people misunderstand the whole Otaku culture. I can't see why it is depicted as a "weird" or "unusual". Look at it this way. Ironman, Batman, Harry Potter, Transformers, etc etc are part of US media culture. I don't see anyone shamed for liking those titles and entities. But when it comes to anime...."Oh no!! You're a weaboo/Otaku". Sheeesh. Back to back hypocrites and fools who only talk #$$%^ because they hate their life and can't find a hobby to exert their efforts on.
If someone where to ask me if I like anime, I say it proudly (in a normal fashion)...yes, without a doubt. I just love seeing their reactions.
surely the name identity stuff it's another topic we could discuss about, (even if I really didn't though about it since you write it here actually) But I hope that's not the big problem for the inactivity! I mean from what I know it's always been like this, but still there was a lot more members and activity!
what you say it could be correct, but I guess it's impossible for this place to change it's name or rules after all this years..
about the critic part, this could definitely be another problem. It's true that critic could be seen negatively especially from young/new users, but the hope here it's that people can actually take some critic! I mean there's nothing wrong with giving advice or tips and in the end in this site I feel that criticism would never be harsh or given in a mean way. I think that one of the few still good things about theo is that there aren't trolls who annoy people with mean comments. so I hope people won't avoid write comments just to hurt feelings, artist must learn to take criticism, and also use it to get better!
that being said a criticism/ tutorial world where to post to actually improve your art it's of course a good idea, and if you would post anything like that you'll have my support, still I hope there will be a good response from everyone!
Yeah i understand! when stuff doesn't work it definitely kills the enthusiasm! I hope things will be fixed on the technical part, so everyone could keep posting here.
yes communication it's important! I mean if you share your stuff and nobody ever care, you don't feel so motivated anymore to post it here!
I don't know why people don't comment... but as I said, I understand that people have their stuff, and as I said real life and errands has the priority! it's just normal to be tired and don't log in or post for a while, it happens!
It's just the people who just stroll in the backroom, watch what it is and doesn't even comment that I don't understand.. that being said, I dont have the right to judge anyone of course, I'm just saying..
it's just a circle repeating itself at this point, we will see how it goes on, but it's not that we could expect much to change if we don't do anything!
I get with what you're saying about the name, but also the name has other problems with it, in Japan it's not a good thing and now more and more people in the English speaking/west see it as the same and are generally more weary of the term, and so new people stumbling across the web name won't really give it a chance.
Courage isnt a matter of not being afraid, Its being afraid and doing what you have to do anyway!
IMO, this site needs to address its identity. Like what I said before, the name "Otaku" isn't just art, it a culture that involves cute to extreme NSFW stuff. AFAIK this site is only deals with a fraction of it. Sad to say this site is like a household fridge that you hang your art on but with limitations. If it's mature or anything above pg-13 it's banned. I'm not saying this is the only reason why this site gets no love. I just think if your going to make an art site that's only pg-13 rated, then DON'T name it "The Otaku". This site is just plain misleading.
I remember before there were actual contests that had real prizes and better yet, recognition and exposure. I don't think that any internet search engines will bring up any content from this site in an image search. If it does, it's probably buried deep in the later pages. By that time, the user would've found the image they were looking for. So basically we're on an island.
As for lack of discussion, I think that people on here are too modest. I'm guilty of it as well, not because I don't care, but I'm not sure if any of my honest opinions might cause a fire. Judging from the art that's posted, we may have very young people here. Who knows, any negativity might just be dagger, probably cause an artist to ditch this hobby. This is why I put a little inscription on my art saying to post whatever they feel like saying. I've been here for too long, I can take the critiques.
I have an idea though. It'll take some members here to do it, all it needs is the effort. Why not we make a section/world that we all can discuss their work/writing together. The whole idea is to help one another to get better through discussion and hands on stuff. My idea involves "red-line corrections" for those who are unsure of their artwork, resource sections (i.e. textures, brushes, art-supply reviews), and maybe even invite some really good artists from other sites to chime their opinions as well. This is why I've been behind the scenes in getting my "Digital Art Workshop" going. I've completed several pages already. I just wanted to upload mass content at one time because I think it'll appear more complete than uploading week by week. It's a start...lets see how far it can go here.

I noticed that TheO was down yesterday, so it kinda unmotivated me to make a post regarding similar issues. I think maybe Adam might be fixing somethings. I have noticed I haven't gotten any weird pop-ups like before.
Anyways you pretty much said everything I think when it comes to the inactivity. I noticed a lot of people mention it but honestly no one does anything.
I also believe that communication is very key to motivating people to post, whether its drawing, world post, wallpapers etc…
I feel like I can't say to much since I haven't been active for a while now. I'm just so tired from work, but it shouldn't be an excuse.
I don't really understand why it's so hard for people to comment on others things. Is it because they're shy, or it's because they don't think it's worth commenting? Other times I hear people say they plan on leaving TheO because their friends left. I think that's a bit ridiculous, since they could try to make new ones.
I'm not sure how the problem could be fixed but maybe if enough people start mentioning it others will notice it too.
