Chapter 1: Is it Wrong to be This Excited?

‘Come on class, finish already.’ I thought to myself as I lightly tapped my pen cap on my notebook as the class was silent and all you heard was writing on paper as the kids who were struggling with the test that we were given were trying their best to finish as many questions as possible.
“I think that I did alright on the test, but I know that I wasn’t going to get a good grade on it. Math just wasn’t my thing. Even though I studied my ass off for this test. I just hope that I get a good enough grade to pass.
“Alright times up.” Dr. Gimerson called out to the call signifying that class was over.
I packed up my stuff and was one of the first out of the remaining people who were still in the room to turn in their tests. Luckily math was my last class for today and the weekend. And on the plus side Veryn came out today! It’s sounded so good, but everyone that I talked to about it didn’t seem to really know what it was.
Oh well I’m glad that I preordered it. Who knows how many copies were made and how many people preordered it. But I’m sure that this will be awesome and that it’ll catch on really fast!
I went back to my apartment. One of my roommates was sitting in the living room with one of her friends working on a project as I walked in. Her name is Elizabeth Jackson. I call her Liz for short. She has soft, deep, red hair that when down falls just past her shoulders. But she normally has it up in a bun of some sort. Her mint green eyes stood out against her hair. She has a smaller build to her then other girls I’ve seen walking around campus. I don’t mean that in a bad way of either honest. She is very positive and proud of the way she looks and I completely respect her for that. I wish that others would have her kind of confidence with self-image sometimes.
But what she has for that confidence she lacks in confidence to talk to men. Liz and I met in our freshmen comp class. It was an English class. The first day of class she sat down next to me. Now I didn’t look like I do now even though it’s only a year later. When I was going into my freshmen year of college I had long blonde hair that I normally tied into a braid and draped over my right shoulder. I wore tighter pants and shirts in my freshmen year too. I could see why I looked like a girl in some way. Anyways she sat down next to me and when I said hi she instantly froze and didn’t look at me. It took me half the semester to get her to talk to me. It wasn’t till we had to do a project together that we really got to know each other. Since then we’ve been really good friends. She convinced me to chop my hair so not it’s a shortish medium length and I wear looser clothes. Liz says that it helps my blue eyes pop out more with having shorter hair. It doesn’t make a difference to me though. It’s less to take care of.
“Hey Vic.” Liz said looking up from her computer for a minuet.
“Hey.” I answered back walking into my room and tossing my bag on my bed.
“How did the test go?” She asked.
“I’d rather not talk about it. I’m going to go get my game.” I stated taking my wallet out of my bag and sticking it in my back pocket.
“Oh Veryn? Can you pick up my copy too?” I looked over at her and raised an eyebrow. “Please.”
“I didn’t think that you preordered that game.” I commented “But fine, you owe me whatever I pay for your copy when I get back.” I stated.
“Thanks so much Vic! Oh I also got the strategy guide so I can look up the stats on the characters and races before starting. Do you think you could pick that up too?” She smiled.
“Are you serious Liz?” I asked raising an eyebrow at her.
“Please. I’ll love you forever if you do.” She batted her pretty red eyelashes at me and I couldn’t help but sigh.
“Not a problem.” I nodded and left quickly before she added anything else to the list.
I was super stoked for this game. I can’t believe the day finally came to where it’s out. “I hope that it’s just as good as it’s been sounding.” I said to myself as I walked to my car.
I drove down to the game store and waited in line and picked up my copy and my roommates copy of Veryn and had to stop myself from looking around to buy some other games and just went straight back to the dorms.
“Sweet…” I muttered to myself as there was a spot closer to my dorm open and I gladly took it.
I got out and locked my car back up after making sure that I had everything out of the car and ran back to the apartment. “Got it.” I told my roommate who was looking like she was slowly, but surely becoming extremely annoyed with her project.
“Thanks Vic.” She responded looking up from her books.
“I’ll toss it on your bed.” I said taking off my shoes.
“Sounds good. Do you have any homework?” She asked.
“I do. I’ll do it later though. It’s the weekend, I’ll be a procrastinator just this once.” I smiled at her and I went to her room first and placed the bag with the game and strategy guide in it on her bed after taking my copy out of the bag.
“That’s not like you at all.” She chuckled a little. “It must be a really good game then.” She said.
“Well I’m about to find out.” I exclaimed back and went into my room and shut the door. I took off the plastic and grabbed my headset and clicked the on button that was on the left side of the headset then set it on the bed. I opened the case and pulled out the chip that contained the game and stuck it in the open slot on the right side of the headset. This virtual reality gaming is still new to the public, but man I loved it. I loved the fact that they made it where you could actually feel the objects in the games and smell the different smells. This was a huge jump in technology. I put the headset on and laid down on the bed.
“And here we go. Veryn Start.” I said to the system and the logo for Veryn blinked twice then the view that was in front of me shattered and I felt myself pulled into the game. I opened my eyes and I was standing in a black room with black lights in the corners. “Hua…well this is new.” I muttered to myself looking around. Then a dim light surrounded me. “I wonder why the choices for the racers or choosing my characters gender hasn’t shown up yet.”
As if on que two Fairies come flying towards me out of nowhere. A girl with pink fairy wings and a strapless white dress that stops about mid thy and had dark pink trim with little white slippers. And a boy with two tone blue fairy wings, a long sleeve medieval cream shirt, black pants with from his mid calf down to his ankles wrapped in leather and brown slippers.
The boy stops a foot away and catches the girl’s arm before she can fly into me and pulls her back.
“Hi there I’m Hadi.” The boy fairy greeted.
“And I’m Shiori!” The girl smiled happily. “We will be your guides through out this character making process!”
“First let’s pick your gender for the game. Do you want to be a boy or a girl?” Hadi asked.
“Wait Hadi if they pick girl you have to go away till I call you back. You can’t see a girl naked!” Shiori exclaimed.
“No I don’t either way they will be wearing undergarments, but if it means that much to you then I’ll turn away as they make adjustments to they features.” Hadi sighed.
I looked at the at the two choices and then clicked male. I just don’t feel comfortable to be the other gender in a virtual reality game at least not yet.
“Male it is!” Hadi said. “Would you like to make some adjustments or leave it up to random?”
“Um…I leave it up to random.” I answered and we moved on.
“Now how about a name. What would you like to be called in the game?” Shiori said.
A box with a keyboard popped up in front of me. I quickly typed in my nickname Vic and hit enter. I liked my nickname so why not go with it for the name of my character in the game. “Okay now for your race. You have nine different races to choose from.” Hadi commented.
“There’s a description under each race but if you want to know more about a certain race let us know and we’ll be happy to tell you more.” Shiori continued and then a circle of smaller versions of the races appeared in front of me. After reading the info of the race under the human race I rotated the left. “Dragonborn…meh…” I kept clicking through. “The ones that catch my eye are the human, Neko, and Kitsune…” I muttered. “I could go with human because I like being underestimated and enjoy a challenge…” I looked up at the two fairies. “What do you two suggest? Hadi, Shiori…” I asked them.
“I’m sorry, but we weren’t programmed to make suggestions.” Shiori told me.
“Oh okay. Not a problem.” I said and went back to looking at the races. “Well Kitsune is fox magic and I could just that magic to make myself appear human so people underestimate me.” I tapped my finished on my chin and then went to Kitsune and clicked enter.
“And finally your class.” Shiori clapped her hands and the five classes of the game appeared in front of me. “Rouge. So going with rouge, I can’t get away from the class.” I said and quickly clicked the rouge name.
“And that’s everything. Would you like to see what you look like since you clicked random?” Hadi asked me.
“Oh sure.” I answered and a mirror phased in front of me.
I was definitely taller with white hair with uneven bangs that framed my face and my hair just brushed my shoulders. White fox ears and a matching tail. My bright gold eyes popped out against my hair. I had a basic rogue clothes on. “I like it.” I nodded.
“Now there’s just on-“ Shiori cut off and I blinked.
“What’s going on?” I muttered tipping head.
Both Hadi and Shiori were glitching in and out. “Hey…” I took a step forward and I felt my footing leave me and I started falling. There was nothing that I could grab onto and I started falling. I screamed as I fell into nothingness. I covered my face as a bright light engulfed me. The next thing I could hear was wind screaming in my ears I moved my arms and I was falling out of the sky literally.
“What the hell is going on?” I shouted into the wind as the ground became closer by the second. ‘Great so I’m going to die before I can even get started.’ I thought looking down at the ground. Everything froze around me and I glitched again to be only a few feet above the ground. Once my feet touched the ground I went into a tuck roll and continued to roll a few times till I came to a stop.
“What the hell…” I muttered sitting up and holding my head.
There will two little poofs of smoke in front of me and Shiori and Hadi were in front of me once again. “Hi there! I know you just got here but do you like what you see?” Shiori asked.
I looked around. I was in a field just outside of a huge town that must have been Skjlom the main city of the game. But shouldn’t I have ended up in the center of town and not out here in the field?
“Just some last tips before you get on your way and get to leveling up and finding friends to go on an adventure with.” Hadi interrupted my thoughts and I looked back at the two fairies. “Take your left hand and swipe it either straight down in front of you or from left to right in front of you to access your menu.”
“There you will be able to get a break down of your weapons, armor, and inventory.” Shiori jumped in. “In your upper left corner is your health gauge and level. If you would like to see how many experience points that you have to go till the next time you level up that is also on the main screen of your menu. The amount of money that you have is in the bottom right of the main menu. And I think that’s everything.”
“Oh and there is a map option in your main menu as well.” Hadi added. “Also there was a new feature that was added since the beta. A lot of people wanted an easier way to find what spells you know for both your race if it’s a magic race and depending what class you choose so there as been a bullet added at the bottom.”
“This also has info on your race if you can’t remember what your race can do.” Shiori stated.
“Enjoy the game!” They said in unison and then poofed away.
I blinked for a moment and then swiped my left hand across my body to have a transparent box appear from the line that I dew with my fingertips. A mini version of my character appeared on the right side of the transparent box then my health, level and experience showed up directly under the mini me and in the corner my money appeared.
But something was off…my character had three tails instead of the one that I saw just moments ago. I turned around and there it was I had two tails. “Level 24?? What the hell is going on here?” I said out loud. I know for a fact that I just fell out of the sky. Did something happen to the game and I got a glitched copy? I mean I’m not complaining and I’ll keep the level boost. But I wonder if this happened to anyone else.
I clicked through my menu so I could find the log out button and make my way around the menu with out having to stop and think about where something was. “Awe sweet I can hide my ears and tails with fox magic. I wonder what level this ended up being unlocked.” I said out loud as I read the instructions on how to use my fox magic.
It took me a couple of tries but I managed to do it. “Alright. Now to town to get a weapon and whatever else I can afford right now before I start to grind.” I muttered as I walked to Skjlom.
