Chapter 2: I’m a Closet Nerd so What?

“Hector on your left.” One of my teammates shouted. I glanced over my shoulder and saw another one of my teammate who was on the opposing team for the scrimmage coming up behind me. I crossed the ball over to the other side of the field then sprinted forward to where the sweeper bounced back and forth to stay on my toes.
“Your not getting past me today Hector.” Carl snickered pushing up his sports glasses.
“I don’t know we’ll see about that.” I smirked at him. My teammate Steven chipped the ball up and over every one. I quickly turned on my toes and sprinted off leaving Carl behind.
Dribbling the ball as I ran closer to the net I ran towards the right corner of the field with Carl close behind. I tapped the ball with the inside of my right foot to give it an opposite spin made it come to almost a stop and quickly slowed down as both of us passed by. Running up to it I leaned my body back and planted my left foot close to the ball and then hook my right foot around and chipped the ball up into the air to cross it to Steven who headed it into the net.
The rabona. A move that I’ve been working on to get right for some time now is finally paying off. I’m still have some work to do with the move but I got it to work in this situation. Coach blew his whistle ending the scrimmage. “Time for the cool down lap.” He bellowed over us.
We all lined up on the side of the filed and took a jog around the soccer filed. “This was a great practice. Even though we’re in the spring season I’m glad that some seniors came to practice. Sadly they won’t be able to play in the scrimmage that we have in a few days, but I know that they’ll come and support us. Now everyone get going some of you have classes that will be starting in a hour.” Coach said.
We all put our hands in and said the name of our college before going back to the benches to get our stuff.
“Hector, your going to come watch the scrimmage on Saturday aren’t you?” Steven asked and he pulled off his cleat.
“I’ll try. I’ve been having a fair bit of homework lately with my classes. It’s been hard to just get here to help out and have a little fun.” I answered. Steven is my little brothers’ roommate. When Steven joined the team as a freshman I took him under my wing. It was only when he said that he was inviting his roommate to have breakfast with us did I realize that he was Vic’s roommate.
“I’ll be really happy if you do come. Maybe I can get Vic to come too.” Steven said.
“I don’t know about that one. A new MMO just came out today so I’m sure that he’ll be preoccupied and forget about the scrimmage.” I told him.
“That’s right. I forgot about that.” Steven sighed as we walked towards the apartments that were on campus.
“He probably already has it to be honest. He does finish classes early on Thursdays.” I commented.
“And only has one class on Friday. I probably will barely be able to talk to him this weekend with that game being out.” He said slumping his shoulders a bit.
“It’ll fizzle out.” I said and turned down the road to my apartment.
“See ya later Hector.” Steven waved at me as he continued to walk to his apartment.
“Yep, later Steven.” I waved back. I was actually about to go and get the game myself. Being a closet nerd I wasn’t about to tell him that I’ve been excited about Veryn too.
As soon as I got to my apartment I threw my bad onto my couch and grabbed my car keys then went straight to the game store to pick up my copy of Veryn that I preordered.
I got the collector’s edition so it also came with a new head set that has veryn written on the sides of the head gear. One thing that I’ve never played before was an MMO and knowing that my little brother was also playing in this game was making me slightly worry that I will run into him but it was a huge game so I doubt it. Beside’s your name can be whatever you want it to be and you can look however you want. There are nine different races in this game. It’s completely worth it.
I locked my apartment door once I got back and opened the box. The head set looked really nice. I got the headset out and plugged it in right away so it could charge as I take a shower. I wasn’t about to start playing Veryn while feeling nasty and sweaty.
Also considering that my headset was brand new just no. After taking a shower I grabbed the game and flipped it over to read the back of the case. ‘Greetings and welcome to the World of Veryn! You have arrived at the largest city of this world called Skjlom. Here you can find just about anything and everything you would need to have fun and enjoy yourself in this ga…world. Soon you will be off on your adventures solo, or with other fellow g…travelers. Like most you will chose to specialize as a particular type of traveler as you wonder your way through this world meeting new and exciting people. So sit back, relax and enjoy your true life in Veryn as your actual life becomes you’re new and unusual dreams for you.’
“That’s an interesting way to put it. Is this game really that good?” I said to no one. I grabbed the headset and put in the game then flopped down on my bed and put the headset on. “Alright only one way to find out.” I muttered as I turned it on and went through with setting it up and finally getting to the home page. “Okay wireless is function properly and I’m still plugged in…So Veryn Start.” I said and the come page quickly scrolled across and found the Veryn logo and then the pixels shattered and I was pulled into darkness.
I quickly shielded my eyes as a light from above shined down on me. Then suddenly two fairies came flying towards me out of the darkness. The boy stops a foot away and catches the girl’s arm before she can fly into me and pulls her back.
“Hi there I’m Hadi.” The boy fairy greeted.
“And I’m Shiori!” The girl smiled happily. “We will be your guides through out this character making process!”
“First let’s pick your gender for the game. Do you want to be a boy or a girl?” Hadi asked.
“Wait Hadi if they pick girl you have to go away till I call you back. You can’t see a girl naked!” Shiori exclaimed.
“No I don’t either way they will be wearing undergarments, but if it means that much to you then I’ll turn away as they make adjustments to they features.” Hadi sighed.
I looked at the two choices and then clicked male. This is my first MMO I’ll stick with my actual gender.
“Male it is!” Hadi said. “Would you like to make some adjustments or leave it up to random?”
“I think I want to leave it up to random to be honest.” I said to the fairies. It was my first MMO and I just really wanted to get into the game.
“Now how about a name. What would you like to be called in the game?” Shiori said.
A box with a keyboard popped up in front of me. I thought for a minuet. “Well one of my OC’s names that I have is named Shun…Shun means fast in Japanese and if I’m going with the Usagi race then Shun would make since as a name.” I muttered to myself then typed in Shun for my user name. “Okay now for your race. You have nine different races to choose from.” Hadi commented.
“There’s a description under each race but if you want to know more about a certain race let us know and we’ll be happy to tell you more.” Shiori continued and then a circle of smaller versions of the races appeared in front of me. I scrolled through them till a small version of the Usagi race was in front of me then I hit enter.
“And finally your class.” Shiori clapped her hands and the five classes of the game appeared in front of me. “Rouge. They can split into a lot of different options and from when I would watch Vic play he went for rouge and I like what they do…but I also like using bows so...” I clicked the ranger class and the options pixilated.
“And that’s everything. Would you like to see what you look like since you clicked random?” Hadi asked me.
“Yes please.” I answered and a mirror phased in front of me.
I was my average height. I have messy green hair with a blue streak in the bangs that were between my eyes. Green bunny ears with white fluff on the inside. From what I could tell from under my basic rouge gear I was still athletic but seeing what race I am probably not as much as I actually am. I now have golden colored eyes and when I turned around to look at my back I noticed I have a white fluffy cottontail. “Not bad.” I muttered out loud looking back at myself in the mirror.
“Now there’s just on-“ Shiori cut off and cocked my eyebrow in confusion.
“What’s going on?” I muttered tipping head.
Both Hadi and Shiori were glitching. I went to take a step forward and I felt my footing leave me and I started falling. There was nothing that I could grab onto and I started falling. I covered my face as a bright light engulfed me. When I looked around I was falling through the sky. Was this supposed to happen? Through what I read in the beta tests there was nothing like this that happened for them. Was this a glitch right at the beginning of the game? What’s worse am I going to get a game over before I even start an adventure? I hit the ground hard and it felt like all the oxygen that I did have in my lungs just escaped and I rolled along the ground and finally came to a stop.
There will two little poofs of smoke in front of me and Shiori and Hadi were in front of me once again. “Hi there! I know you just got here but do you like what you see?” Shiori asked.
Wait…I’m not in the center of town? Why not? Why am I in a field? I mean I’m really close to the gates of Skjlom, which is the biggest city in the whole game.
“Just some last tips before you get on your way and get to leveling up and finding friends to go on an adventure with.” Hadi interrupted my thoughts and I looked back at the two fairies. “Take your left hand and swipe it either straight down in front of you or from left to right in front of you to access your menu.”
“There you will be able to get a break down of your weapons, armor, and inventory.” Shiori jumped in. “In your upper left corner is your health gauge and level. If you would like to see how many experience points that you have to go till the next time you level up that is also on the main screen of your menu. The amount of money that you have is in the bottom right of the main menu. And I think that’s everything.”
“Oh and there is a map option in your main menu as well.” Hadi added. “Also there was a new feature that was added since the beta. A lot of people wanted an easier way to find what spells you know for both your race if it’s a magic race and depending what class you choose so there as been a bullet added at the bottom.”
“This also has info on your race if you can’t remember what your race can do.” Shiori stated.
“Enjoy the game!” They said in unison and then poofed away.
“Wow…well this is an interesting start to the game. I wonder if this happened so someone else.” I muttered as I opened up my menu to see how low my health was after that fall.

“Holy…fudger nutter biscuit eating bulldog why the hell am I level 24?” That was the first thing I noticed. “Of course my health was dangerously low now from that fall.” I sighed. “I should get into town before I get attacked without a weapon.” I closed my menu and started to jog then started to sprint. I was so much faster as this race! If only I had this kind of speed in real life. “This is amazing!” I said out loud before running into Skjlom to get my weapon and meet some new people.
