It's not a direct complaint or in chat. It's on people's worlds. Basically they're whining since their friends or people they think are more deserving didn't win. The excuses range from... the judges suck and picked crappy finalists, they're not even a contributor to the site to it's rigged, etc. Hence the term 'butthurt' in my post. Cause that's exactly what it is.
This whole thing reminds me of the stupid emo thread we had over at OB, the one where they called for all of us newer mods to be dismissed, since the oldies were butthurt over a newer member like me being made a mod. You get respect from the community by earning it, not by length of membership.
The whole thing is just painfully stupid since the people interested in the contest are merely following NYAF's instructions to sign up here in order to submit their entry.
It's also irritating since some of the people bitching... I honestly thought had better sense than to whine in that fashion. I thought they were more mature than that. =/ So it's a letdown to see them behaving in that fashion.
Exactly. The contest is so much more than theOtaku and limiting entries to long standing members of a website would be like telling someone actually going to it... sorry you're not allowed through the doors since you haven't been living here in NY. =/

I can't think of a single contest we've had where someone didn't whine over it. But the 'they are only a new member and therefore shouldn't win' just irks me. It's so damn elitist and snobbish and painfully stupid.
I have to admit, I haven't actually seen anyone complaining about this directly - was it something that came up in chat?
In any case, I agree with you 100%. Contests are all about finding the greatest artists/contributors and showcasing their amazing work - it has absolutely nothing to do with the seniority of said contestant.
One of the things I dislike most is this idea that newer members are somehow less worthy than longtime ones. Everybody deserves the same opportunity. Whether you've been here a month, or ten years...you're still an Otakuite. :)

I haven't been paying attention, as some of my cohorts have also said. I saw the winner, I thought her entry was amazing, and I loved the interview that NYAF had with her (I think it was NYAF?). That, to me, showed not only her professionalism but also her sincerity for winning, for art, and for being interested in sticking around.
People join theOtaku for all different reasons, and come here by a variety of means. I've gotten people to join just because they wanted to participate in Chat events and aren't active otherwise. If a person joins theO for a contest, then whatever. It's just like back in the day when people would join just to download wallpapers. Difference here is "that person" ended up winning a contest.
I'm rather disappointed to hear that people would complain over something as trivial as that. But oh well. In the long run, it's their energy and time that they're wasting.
People are still whining about who won? The contest is hosted in NY. Why in the world would they limit entries for such a huge anime festival to only longtime members of one website? That's got to be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard people complain about.
TheOtaku hosted it and gained a lot of good publicity which can only be a good thing for the site. To try and turn people away just because they haven't been a member here for a certain time... would be akin to shooting yourself in the foot.
The people at NYAF would have to be pretty stupid to do something like that. And Adam would never try to put such a stupid limitation on a contest like this.
I'm gonna have to agree with your assessment. Butthurt indeed.
