I'd suggest The Dresden Files to get you kinda sorta geared up for that sort of thing. Jim Butcher may be as graphic as Goodkind, but he doesn't spend eighty-odd pages on BDSM.
And Harry Dresden is like a twisted version of Dr. Who. Really smart, really powerful, and sarcastic like you wouldn't believe.
Worse than me, even. His response to being rescued from the chief of the Denarians (Fallen angels; think thirty pieces of silver for the myth basis) by an elderly and deadly Knight of the Cross (think Knights Templar with real imaginary power), after a long period of immersion in ice-cold running water (meant to ground all magic, since he is a wizard) was to giddily burst into the Underdog theme.
Heh, just wait til you get near the end. *evil laughter* XD
I had the same reaction when I watched Haibane Renmei. I was very surprised that it left me almost bawling. ^^ Probably why it's been my favorite anime since.
To give you a hint... Falconsbane in Mercedes Lackey's books is nothing but a crude imitation. Having read that will not prepare you for this series, at all.
O_O The only good thing about Falconsbane was what finally happened to that sick bastard.
Because the make-believe worlds they create are still real.
Well yeah... I just wish I didn't get put off so easily. lol I like reading someone who is good. There's nothing more satisfying than having a well written book in your hands. I hate reading stuff that starts out good, but doesn't keep it real so to speak. It's like they get so far and then flop. If that makes sense.
Anyway, I'll be keeping it in mind and working on not letting my curiosity get the better of me. That's how I found out I was squeamish in the first place. Watching or reading something and realizing how much it freaked me out. >_< I hate that.
He's one of my favorite characters in the book. :p Especially after what he did to the mob that came to get him in the first book. Oh did I just die laughing when I read that. It's great how he continues to be such an amusing character.
Because like Allamorph said, they keep it real. Many authors fall prey to letting things slide because the world is make-believe. So far, Goodkind is avoiding the loopholes that others use to justify characters actions.
I thought he had made the same mistake in the first book only to read the second and realize he had done no such thing. It's almost like physics in that for each action there is an equal and opposite reaction. You simply can't do something and have nothing go wrong later, or rather you can't expected the consequences to never happen because they can, just like real life.
And since it would take too long to explain, you'll just have to wait until you're a little less squeamish to find out. Trust me on this. Based on everything you've told me that you've read. Not one of them comes close to getting as real as Goodkind does.

Anyway, Gankutsuou on the other hand, even though it does have some adult material in it, is something I'm sure you could handle just fine. So... go and watch that and come back to Goodkind in a few years. ^_~
Because the make-believe worlds they create are still real.
That's what I love about Goodkind: he doesn't make mistakes. Every sentence is important, even if it's just the main character scratching the back of his neck. (Which, for the record, that little detail absolutely blew my mind, considering how long he spent setting up for the why of it.)
o_O Wow... Now I'm really curious to find out just what made you cry. I've been looking at some of the artwork for this show... it's so pretty. Just like the wallpaper you submitted.
*sighs* Why are good authors also graphic? Makes me want to whack them upside the head! >_> Because I'm too squeamish to read it. And yet after reading what you've posted about it... I'm 100% curious to read it and find out for myself how good it is! Bah! *head desk*
Wait... it actually made you cry? Damn... now I'm really curious as to what could have actually done that. I'm only on episode five though, a long way away from episode 18.
Now you have me wanting to watch it... I mean, since when do you cry over a show! o_O Though that makes me wonder if I really want to or not.
That's great that the series you are reading is continuing to be good. I really dislike it when the first book in a series is good and the rest aren't so great.

That actually sounds interesting. A twisted Dr. Who. :p

The more I hear about that show, the more I want to watch it. That wallpaper you made is fantastic.
And authors who keep it real and have excellent detail as well are the best. It's great to find something you really enjoy.
In the name of the tune I will punish you!

Oh yeah, Stone Os Tears was even better than Wizard's First Rule. ^^ When Richard is taken away by that sisterhood... Yipe! O_O
Tell me about it, especially when you take into account the types of sisters there are, that's enough to have me going... oh hell.
Heh, I'm going to make it a point to watch gankutsuou as soon as I can ^^
You won't regret it. :p I'm still surprised I actually cried. That's pretty rare for me.
