I don't think you're attention whoring, Crystia. I think you are spot on with this - nobody really has the right to denigrate the ways in which others choose to support the relief effort in Japan. Some will donate money, some will donate time and/or goods and others will simply show moral support. I think all of the above are valid.
I do take issue with those who try to assign a supernatural meaning to the earthquake (particularly those who try to claim that God is somehow punishing people), in part because I think these people are using the tragedy as a platform to spout their own nonsense.
Having said that, these kinds of disasters unfortunately bring out all kinds of responses and many of them are of the crazy (and even cruel) variety.
What matters most is that people actually care and that they do whatever they can, within their means, to be supportive. That certainly doesn't include attacking people for stupid and baseless reasons.

Took me a while to get what you were trying to say.
I haven't really done anything.Yeah, I am not in a position to donate and I don't really talk about it or express how bad I feel about the incident. Not that I don't care about it.
I watch the news n keep myself informed on how they are coping with the situation. That's about as much as I have done.
I don't really mind the 'Pray for Japan' signs though.

I've actually been staying away from people on anime forums and places where I know I'll see crap like that. I really hate it when people take something like what happened to Japan and turn it into some piss pot thing like; "look at me I'm so amazing because I just donated x amount of money for Japan or I drew a picture/created a wallpaper/eCard so I'm better than everyone else and I care more."
I feel bad because I can't do anything for Japan, really, I'm too poor to donate and I don't have any time to make anything anymore. Plus, what good is a picture going to do? And I don't need a nation's pain rubbed in my face because someone feels like they need recognition! >A< *::*is in a bad mood right now*::*
So yeah, I agree with you pretty much 100% on this topic. I need to sleep. I am making no sense.
I've seen some of the complaining going on. I'd smack them if I thought it would do any good. I've just held off on saying anything since like you're pointing out, it just amounts to more Attention Whoring. Oh well, hopefully the kids, provided some of them are, will grow up. ^^
